Labor Educator/Communications Coordinator Job at University of Michigan
Summary
Works collaboratively with labor and community leaders and Center staff in program development and implementation of educational programs. The Labor Educator & Communications Coordinator oversees all online conferences and training events as well as assists with regular Center programming and administration as needed. The job also includes maintaining the center’s database system including overseeing mass mailings.

The Center for Labor & Community Studies provides high quality training through annual conferences, six-week certificate courses and symposiums with a focus on effective advocacy, negotiating, organizing, and leadership development. A main operating principle of the Center is that working people engaged on the front lines bring a wealth of knowledge to the table. Based on this idea, training content design is guided by planning committees made up of labor and community activists.
Responsibilities*
Labor Educator
- Serve as lead coordinator for new annual conference supporting LGBTQ+ Community members and allies in their workplaces and Unions
- Lead on developing ongoing online and in-person 6-week course programming
- Lead on developing ongoing online symposium series
- Lead on outreach to local unions whose members do not typically enjoy tuition assistance
- Some teaching for short course programs and contracted education with specific unions
Communications
- Maintain and use Center’s mass email system and database
- Proofread and edit external communications
Administration
- Assist lead administrator with registration system, venue arrangements, and conference material preparations during peak activity periods and as needed
Required Qualifications*
- Bachelor's degree in relevant field or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Experience in communications, database management
- Experience in managing the planning, design, and development of online programming
- Excellent organizational skills
- Strong record of and commitment to adult education instruction and workers' rights
- Experience working closely with labor, business and community organizations.
- Excellent writing skills
Additional Information
- Involves evening and weekend work
- Includes travel and use of staff member's own personal car
