The Department of Pharmacology at the University of Virginia seeks a laboratory professional to join Fox Lab. The successful candidate may be hired as Lab and Research Technician 2, Lab Specialist, Lab Specialist Intermediate, or Lab Specialist Senior depending on qualifications and previous experience. This role will assist in the operation of a mass spectrometry facility.

The incumbent will be preparing and analyzing small molecules (drugs, lipids, amino acids, etc) by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry for multiple internal and external investigators and maintaining equipment as part of the facility. Specific tasks may include solid-phase and liquid-liquid extractions, development of liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry methods, and analysis of “-omics” datasets. While some relevant experience is desired, training will be provided.

For the Lab and Research Technician 2 position, the incumbent must be able to provide technical support for projects and engage in complex scientific experiments, must be able to handle complex administrative and logistical tasks, and must be able to operate under supervision with a degree of independence when following set protocols and procedures.

For the Lab Specialist, Lab Specialist Intermediate, and Lab Specialist Senior position, the incumbent must be able to perform complex lab and research related tasks, acting as a specialist on research methods, equipment, and data analysis approaches specific to the experiments. Incumbent must also be able to perform daily activities without supervision and must be able to train others on work processes and policies. The Lab Specialist would additionally provide EHS and other institutional compliance management.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Lab and Research Technician 2

Education: Associate's degree

Experience: At least 2 years of lab experience which may include student experience. Bachelor's degree in related science will be considered in lieu of experience.

Lab Specialist

Education: Bachelor's degree.

Experience: 3 years of experience. 6 years of lab-related experience accepted in lieu of degree.

Lab Specialist Intermediate

Education: Bachelor's degree.

Experience: 6 years of experience in a lab technician role. Master's degree may substitute for required experience. 9 years of lab-related experience accepted in lieu of degree.

Lab Specialist Senior

Education: Bachelor's degree.

Experience: 9 years of experience in a lab technician role. May substitute with Master's or Terminal degree plus 4 years of experience in a lab technician role and supervisory experience. 12 years of lab-related experience accepted in lieu of degree.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Degree concentration in biology, analytical chemistry, biochemistry, or a related discipline.
  • Experience with statistical and bioinformatics approaches.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint and Excel).


PHYSICAL DEMANDS

This position can spend extensive periods of time standing and squatting while conducting experiments or caring for animals. Also requires keyboarding and other bench work and animal procedures requiring finer finger manipulation.
