Salary Range: $88,248 – $118,716 Annually

This position is eligible for telework (up to five days per week) with the expectation that there may be times when the employee would be required to be on site.

The Washington State Department of Corrections is seeking a dynamic and versatile individual to join the Information Technology team as the IT Security Senior Specialist! In this role, you will ensure the Department's Off-State Network (OSN) is safe and secure from cyber-attacks.

The IT Security Senior Specialist is tasked with being the first point of contact for all security questions, consults, or concerns offering advice and direction while remaining proactive in identifying and acting on anomalies within the OSN network. You will implement security controls to protect the OSN and state Information Technology assets.

As the Off-State Network (OSN) Security Analyst, you will play a critical role in identifying potential attacks through monitoring and reacting to potential security threats identified through security control systems for the OSN including. By collaborating with stakeholders in the Department as well as other state and federal agencies, you will be able to design, implement, tailor and maintain security controls for all OSN systems to ensure appropriate controls are in place to prevent a cybersecurity breach.

The position would be responsible for managing or advising on applicable security tools and software for the OSN as well as for tailoring security tools, settings, and configurations to balance the needs of the agency with security requirements.

Duties

As a IT Security Senior Specialist, some of your duties will include:
  • Subject Matter Expert (SME) in analyzing identified security threats on the OSN through the use of a Security Information and Event Management (SIEM) system.
    • Provides in-depth analysis and evaluation of network security threats and vulnerabilities for the OSN.
    • Executes event correlation using information gathered from a variety of sources within the enterprise to gain situational awareness and determine the effectiveness of anomalous behavior and/or an observed attack.
    • Enables business operations while reducing and mitigating security risks through isolating, analyzing, and resolving complex network and application issues.
  • Provide timely detection, identification, and alerting of possible attacks/intrusions and anomalous activities identified on the Intrusion Detection System/Intrusion Prevention System (IDS/IPS) for the OSN.
    • Inspects and analyzes network traffic to identify anomalous activity and potential threats to network resources.
    • Validates intrusion detection system (IDS) alerts against network traffic using packet analysis tools.
  • Supports DOC Operations Teams in configuring and maintaining endpoint protection solutions
  • Supports CSU and Network teams regarding internet content filtering for the OSN.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Computer Science or related field in information management, information security or cyber security from an accredited institution whose accreditation is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA).
  • One or more of the following professional certifications:
    • Security+
    • CISSP
    • GSEC
    • CCNA-Security
    • SSCP
    • Certified Risk and Information Systems Controls (CRISC)
    • Certified Intrusion Analyst (GCIA)
    • Certified Incident Handler (GCIH)
    • EC-Council Certified Security Analyst (ECSA)
  • Experience in or working knowledge of any of the following areas:
    • Security audits and compliance monitoring
    • IT cyber security policies
    • Managing/monitoring traffic flows across networks
    • Detecting host and network-based intrusions via intrusion detection technologies
    • System and application security threats and vulnerabilities
    • Performing packet-level analysis

Telework Details
This position may be allocated for telework. Work may be performed from your home or another offsite location within the state of Washington using a reliable internet or cellular hotspot service at that time. Employees are expected to perform assigned duties in a safe manner, to take proper care all state-issued equipment, and maintain confidentiality of all information in possession while working offsite. Employees will be required to commute to a Department of Corrections facility or field office as business requires, to potentially include components of the onboarding process. Some offices will have a “drop in” area available, however, a dedicated workspace within a DOC facility will not be provided.
