Introduction

SMUD is looking to fill High Voltage Electrician vacancies at the Advanced Apprentice level. At the Advanced Apprentice level, it is expected that the incumbent possesses knowledge of basic electronics including AC and DC with an emphasis on AC polyphase electrical theory; theory of operation of transmission and distribution electrical systems including electrical symbols, electrical drawing fundamentals and conventions to read mechanical and electrical drawings such as wiring diagrams, schedules, schematics and elementaries, one-lines and layout drawings; electrical repair procedures to identify and correct problems with electrical equipment and circuits; electronic and electrical components to troubleshoot, repair, and conduct preventative maintenance; electrical test equipment such as DC insulation testers (Megger), voltmeters, and ammeters and have the skill to troubleshoot electrical and electronic problems and provide necessary repairs; safely work around hazardous voltage under general supervision.

Purpose

An Apprentice High Voltage Electrician learns and assists in performing skilled mechanical and electrical work in and about electric substations, underground systems, and power generating plants.

Nature and Scope

The Apprentice High Voltage Electrician is concerned primarily with learning the skills involved in the installation and field maintenance of electrical equipment utilized in the electric utility industry.

Duties and Responsibilities

Work may include, but is not limited to, the following: (NOTE: While in general all the functions and requirements listed are essential, individual positions and/or locations may not require all duties be performed.)


  • Follow all safety policies, procedures, practices, and exercise caution when performing duties.
  • Under general supervision, the Apprentice High Voltage Electrician will be assisting with the installation and removal of conduit, fittings, circuit breakers, transformers, voltage regulators, switchboard meters, relays, control panels, and termination and splicing of wire and cable.
  • Learning to test and service batteries; test, repair, and overhaul motors, generators, breakers, motor operated disconnects, and transformers.
  • Work in the construction, maintenance, and repair of distribution and transmission substations; pull wires and cables; lay out, measure, cut, install, and splice cable in distribution and transmission stations.
  • Inspect the work of outside construction vendors/workers; and perform various calculations related to electrical measurements such as voltage, current, power and angles.
  • Responding in a timely manner to emergency conditions/outages.
  • Requires climbing ladders and steel structures.
  • Learning the switching that is done under direction from dispatch.
  • Operating District vehicles in the course of performing job duties.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Educational Requirement

Attend classes after normal working hours on a non-paid basis in order to obtain skills and/or knowledge required on the job; willingness to learn and operate a variety of tools/equipment/vehicles; must complete the Electrician/Cable Splicer apprenticeship training program requirements in order to advance to the journey level.

Required Licenses/Certificates

Must possess and maintain a valid California Driver’s License (CDL) and a satisfactory driving record (not more than two moving violations in the last two years).

Knowledge Of

Mathematics, including algebra and trigonometry functions; and, basic electrical terminology and theory.

Skills To

Effectively communicate orally and in writing; use basic hand and power tools; basic computer skills; remember and follow written and oral instructions; read and interpret written instructions; complete forms, requisitions, and reports; develop and maintain effective working relationships; learn to perform work at heights, in vaults, and manholes below ground in a safe manner; learn to perform required math calculations, including algebra; climb; and distinguish colors.

Desirable Qualifications

Progressively responsible experience testing, installing, commissioning, and maintaining electrical equipment in high voltage transmission and distribution substations and training equivalent to at least the 24-month level of a Substation Electrician Apprenticeship.

Applicants must be able to perform the essential job functions with or without a reasonable accommodation.

On-site Work

This role will be an on-site role that will require being in person at one of SMUD's campuses daily to complete work tasks.
