Function

The purpose of the class is to oversee the City's Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) programs. This class works under general supervision independently developing work methods and sequences.

Minimum Requirements


  • Requires any combination of education and experience equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree in Safety, Environmental Safety, Industrial Hygiene or a related field from an accredited college or university with major coursework in a field directly related to occupational health and safety or public sector regulatory compliance
  • A minimum of five (5) years of full-time equivalent experience in planning, implementing or evaluating programs in occupational health and safety as well as lead and asbestos compliance or closely related experience.
  • Requires a minimum of three (3) years of experience in planning, writing, creating, and implementing programs in occupational health and safety.
  • Asbestos Inspector-Management Planner certification is required and will be provided by the employer.
  • Certified Safety Professional or Certified Industrial Hygienist preferred.
  • This position is safety sensitive and is subject to testing for alcohol and controlled substances in accordance with the City’s current substance abuse policy.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and must have and maintain a satisfactory driver’s record based on the City of Hampton’s criteria.
  • Must successfully pass a background check related to this position prior to any offer of employment or promotion.

Additional Requirements
  • The incumbent may be considered “essential personnel” during City emergency situations or at the direction of the City Manager which may include long hours and unusual schedules.
