In 1887, John Ames Mitchell, editor of Life magazine, raised $800 to send 266 children from New York City to the Life Fresh Air Farm in Branchville, Connecticut. Since that first summer, thousands of children and teens have participated in our nature-based summer camp and after-school programs in New York and New Jersey.

As a group leader, you will be the co-leader of a small camp group and be directly responsible for the care of 10 - 12 campers each day. Each day starts and ends with a group sunrise/sunset meeting, and in between your day will be full of team activities, music and singing, hiking, nature exploration, playground time, and more.

You'll be responsible for ensuring that your campers' summer experiences are safe, meaningful, and fun! This is a seasonal, full time, exempt position that runs June - August.

Essential Functions

● Lead nature and adventure based activities with your assigned group of children

●Build relationships with your campers as individuals

●Build relationships with parents and maintain open lines of communication

● Actively participate in games, crafts, meals, and activities with your group

● Approach conflicts in an emotionally responsive manner

● Lead your campers on day trips through the city as scheduled

Job Specifications

● Must be old enough to qualify for summer camp employment (16+)

● Experience working with children ages 3 - 10 required

● Experience working with groups of children preferred

● Work and/or educational experience related to child development, leadership, child psychology, environmental education, and/or behavior management preferred

● Current First Aid/CPR certification preferred

● The desire and ability to work in an outdoor setting in all weather required

● A good sense of humor, high level of patience, and the ability to engage appropriately with youth while maintaining professional boundaries.

● The ability to be successful in a fast-paced environment, and flex to changing needs

● The ability to move safely over uneven terrain, for up to 30 continuous minutes

● The ability to see and respond to dangerous situations

● The ability to run, bend, and change directions while moving

Program Dates, Rates, and Locations

Prospect Park
June 26 - September 1
$5,500 total
$5,300 base salary, $200 bonus upon completion of contract

Brooklyn Bridge Park
July 3 - September 1
$4,950 total
$4,770 base salary, $180 bonus upon completion of contract

Morningside Park
July 3 - August 4
$2,750 total
$2,650 base salary, $100 bonus upon completion of contract

SENIOR GROUP LEADERS will be identified during training based on skill and experience level. If those identified choose to accept additional leadership responsibilities, pay will increase accordingly.

Job Types: Full-time, Temporary

Pay: $5,500.00 per year

Schedule:

  • 8 hour shift
  • Monday to Friday

COVID-19 considerations:
Our ops procedures are developed and refined in accordance with CDC and NY Health Dept guidance. Be aware that staff must follow strict health and safety guidelines. Campers within the same cohort are not expected to socially distance.
