POSITION TITLE: Grounds Worker l TERM OF EMPLOYMENT: 12 Months FLSA EXEMPTION STATUS: NON-EXEMPT Pay Grade: 8 JOB SUMMARY: Assist and participate with maintenance personnel in a variety of landscaping duties including watering, mowing, weeding, trimming, and fertilizing lawns. This includes assisting with litter and debris control at the school and facility’s grounds. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS 1. Assist and participate in planting, watering, and maintaining landscaped areas consisting of bushes, trees, flowers and shrubs. 2. Rake or blow leaves and clear debris from walks, fields, courts, and other district facilities. 3. Make sure school entrances are free from obstruction after a weather event. Example: Removal of downed trees, snow, etc. 4. Assist and participate in trimming and pruning bushes, trees and shrubs and removing debris. DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES List most important duties first 1. Learn and apply methods and techniques used in the aeration of lawns and the application of fertilizers and seeding 2. Operate various types of motorized equipment in conjunction with daily tasks as assigned at the school or maintenance department. 3. Learn and apply methods, techniques, tools and operational characteristics of the mechanical equipment used in the preparation of landscaped grounds to include but not limited to forklifts, skid steer loaders, backhoes, tractors, bush hog mowers, finishing mowers, reel mowers, riding mowers and push mowers. 4. Inspect, Repair ,remove playground equipment. 5. Use hand tools, such as shovels, rakes, pruning saws, saws, hedge or brush trimmers, or axes. 6. Construct/Repair or replace concrete walkways 7. Patch asphalt driveways or basketball courts. 8. Construct or repair fencing. 9. Prune or trim trees, shrubs, or hedges, using shears, pruners, or chain saws. 10. Clean drainage ditches. 11. Perform other related duties as assigned. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS OR STANDARDS REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS Minimum Qualifications Desirable Qualification  Possession of a valid driver’s license issued by the state of North Carolina  Must maintain a safe driving record  High School or equivalent  Possess or have ability and driving record necessary to obtain a Class-A North Carolina Commercial Driver License  Knowledge of basic equipment and methods of grounds maintenance operations.  One to three years’ experience in landscaping or custodial / maintenance work. PROBLEM SOLVING  Must be able to use and interpret terminology and language used in the specific trade.  Must be able to make effective and immediate decisions under pressure with proper levels of supervision or the absence of supervisor COMMUNICATION/INTERACTIONS  Ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, to follow oral and written instructions. This includes the ability to respond professionally to requests, concerns and inquiries from school system, department staff and the general public. CUSTOMER RELATIONSHIPS  Ability to relate, cooperate and coordinate with principals, teachers, staff, other supervisors and directors to accomplish the overall mission of the Facilities Department.  Ability to maintain a positive work environment with co-workers, supervisors and department staff. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS WORK ENVIRONMENT: Strength: Medium to heavy - Exert force 50-60 lbs., frequently; and up to 25 lbs., constantly; or a negligible amount of force to frequently lift, carry, push, pull or move objects. Physical Demands: Frequent sitting, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, carrying, reaching, handling, and repetitive fine motor activities. Hearing and speech to communicate in person or over the telephone. Vision: Frequent near acuity and occasional far acuity. Mobility to work in a typical office setting and use standard office equipment. Vision to read printed materials, a VDT screen, or other monitoring devices. Environmental Conditions: Varies from building to exposure to outside weather conditions with temperatures ranging from mild/moderate to extreme cold/heat. Exposure to noise intensity levels ranging from moderate to loud for occasional to frequent time periods. Hazards: Furniture, playground/office equipment, communicable diseases, chemicals and fumes (as related to specific assignment), and power/hand-operated equipment and machinery (as related to specific assignment).
