TXDOT’s Wharton County Maintenance Office is located in Wharton, Texas. Our workforce consists of 17 full time employees, with duties ranging from roadway maintenance, operating heavy equipment, sign replacement, herbicide application, roadway level-up, seal coat, edge repair, vehicle maintenance and much more. Starting Annual Salary Range:

  • General Transportation Tech I, A14: $37,200.00 - $49,139.00/year
  • General Transportation Tech II, A15: $40,800.00 - $62,045.00/year

This position is for one General Transp Tech I or II. The Texas Department of Transportation reserves the sole right in determining the level of position based on the applicants work experience, education, skill level and all other appropriate factors, including business needs.

Position Description


Performs routine transportation operations or maintenance support work such as: roadway maintenance and repair; light and heavy equipment operation; preventive and minor maintenance on equipment; traffic control; and helping the public during emergency situations. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.

Essential Duties:

  • Assists in identifying, repairing and installing signs, delineators, mailbox supports and posts; performs basic welding as needed; as required uses/moves equipment/tools, materials and products related to these activities.
  • Drives a state vehicle to assist in providing support to local law enforcement officials at accident sites; assists stranded motorists as required.
  • Assists with traffic control; places and gathers cones, warning signs and barricades; flags traffic.
  • Determines placement of traffic control devices and installs/moves devices.
  • Maintains highways and rights-of-way; performs roadway repairs; erects and repairs guard rails, highway markers and signs; hauls materials and equipment to job sites.
  • Move/picks up litter and roadway debris.
  • Operates light equipment such as a front-end loader-one and a quarter cubic yards or less, pneumatic roller, rotary broom, spreader box, backhoe, street sweeper, and mower.
  • Performs preventive maintenance inspections (PMI), routine servicing and minor repairs on equipment and completes various required reports including time-keeping, equipment forms, inventory, accident forms, and PMI.
  • Sands or cleans bridges and roads, posts warning signs, helps the public and performs other work as directed during emergency situations such as floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, snowstorms, accidents, and hazardous material spills.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

General Transportation Tech I- No Experience Required
General Transportation Tech II- 1 YEAR transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, heavy equipment operation, or related work experience.

Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated parttime equivalent
No supervisory experience required.
No Substitution

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
  • Must obtain a Commercial Class "A" Driver's License or have obtained a CDL "A” License, within 120 calendar days from date of employment.

If an applicant does not have a Class A CDL at the time of hire, TxDOT will provide training for those who need it. Employees will be required to test using a truck with a manual transmission.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and above 100 degrees for more than one hour
  • Subject to noise and vibration
  • Subject to hazards-moving vehicles/mechanical parts, high places/heat, or chemicals
  • Subject to atmospheric conditions-fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, poor ventilation
  • Subject to air and skin exposure to oils and other cutting fluids
  • Required to wear protective gear-respirator, hard hat, or other device
  • Works in narrow aisles or passageways
  • Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs
  • Climbing - ascending/descending ladders, stairs, scaffoldings, ramps, etc
  • Stooping-bending body downward and forward by bending spine at waist
  • Kneeling-bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee(s)
  • Reaching-extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction
  • Standing-prolonged periods of time
  • Walking-moving on foot to accomplish tasks: long distance/from one work site to another
  • Pushing-using upper extremities to press against object with force to move in a direction
  • Pulling-using upper extremities to exert force moving objects in a sustained motion
  • Lifting-raising objects from lower to higher position/horizontally to a different position
  • Grasping-applying pressure to an object with fingers and palm
  • Talking-expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken words
  • Hearing-perceive sound at normal speaking levels;receive information by oral communication
  • Close Visual Acuity-using measurement devices; and assembly or fabrication parts
  • Visual Acuity-operate machines, such as drill presses, power saws, and mills
  • Visual Acuity-operate motor vehicles and heavy equipment
