Responsibilities

Job Purpose

The Fundamentals Manager role analyzes North American energy markets and develops a comprehensive view of current and future energy market price formation (natural gas, energy, ancillary services, capacity, and REC) keeping up to date on regulatory, market reform and technology development. The role is responsible for providing expert analysis of North American energy markets.

Key Accountabilities
  • Ability to synthesize a market view consistent with fundamental economic incentives and theory and communicate this view to the organization.
  • Analyse market, historical, and fundamental data to draw inferences and present results in a clear and understandable format to management and external customers.
  • Provide market insights in various power markets (ERCOT, SPP, PJM, MISO, NYISO, CAISO, etc.) based on clear understanding of market fundamentals, regulatory development, renewable penetrations, storage / demand response growth, etc.
  • Coordinate power market assumptions with Development, Finance, and Energy Management staff providing long and short-term and nodal price forecasts where applicable.

Qualifications

Experience/Qualifications/Education Required

  • Bachelor’s and/or master’s in electrical engineering, Economics, Business Administration, Mathematics, or a related quantitative field (power system emphasis desired)
  • 5-7 years of experience in energy trading, renewables development or energy industry forecasting/analytics/research

Additional Requirements

  • High level of understanding of zonal long term power market forecasting. Relevant work experience providing quantitative analysis, electricity market modeling, and/or consulting.
  • Experience leading modeling projects in a consulting or corporate work environment.
  • Broad knowledge of US power industry structures, policies, regulations & market fundamentals including capacity markets, RECs and RPS standards.
  • Familiarity with recent trends in conventional generation, renewables, natural gas, energy storage, transmission & distributed generation.
  • Strong understanding of transmission system and power flow fundamentals, including LMP price formation
  • Ability to translate model outputs into business insight & articulate impact of results on the business.

Technical Skills

  • Advance Excel, Python, SQL, or other programming skills. Familiarity with Power BI, data visualization, production cost modelling (PLEXOS, GE MAPS, PROMOD, UPLAN) and capacity expansion, (RESOLVE) resource adequacy LOLE (GE-MARS, SERVM, RECAP).
The expected starting pay range for this role is $103,000.00 - $139,000.00 USD. This range is an estimate and base pay may be above or below the ranges based on several factors including but not limited to location, work experience, certifications, and education. In addition to base pay, Pattern’s compensation program includes a bonus structure for full-time employees of all levels.
