Description
The mission of the Kentucky Energy & Environment Cabinet (EEC) is to improve the quality of life for all Kentuckians by protecting our land, air, and water resources by utilizing our natural resources in an environmentally conscientious manner. We do this by helping families connect with nature and preserving the Commonwealth’s natural heritage; and by supporting innovative, resilient, and sustainable energy solutions that together bring economic benefit to the commonwealth.

This is a grant funded time-limited (GFTL) position. This means it is a position that is paid entirely as the result of a grant. The duration of employment shall not exceed the life of the grant that funds the position. An employee appointed to a GFTL position is required to meet the minimum requirements for the classification. Further, an employee appointed to a GFTL position is designated as an unclassified (non-merit) employee. A GFTL employee is eligible to receive benefits at the same level as a classified (merit) employee in a permanent position.

The agency may authorize the selected applicant to telecommute two days a week. The agency may terminate or modify the telecommuting arrangement at any time. By joining the Division of Forestry/Forest Management Branch/Stewardship, FIA, and Urban Section as a/an Forester in Bell county, you will have the opportunity to significantly contribute to ensuring the programmatic integrity of the Forest Inventory and Analysis Program, and the consistent delivery of services to the public.

During the performance of your assigned duties, you will interact on a daily/weekly basis with not only the forest products industry and the public, but with branch personnel, branch management, and the division's program staff.

Holders of the Forester position will complete tasks such as:
  • Performing professional forester field duties necessary to complete an inventory of Kentucky's forest lands.
  • Performing administrative duties to process data collected from forest inventory.
  • Following US Forest Service procedures, including weekly plot data downloads and US Forest Service accomplishment reports.
  • Attending workshops, seminars, and training sessions; and passing all competency tests associated with the training and the position.
  • Participating in forest fire suppression and prevention efforts when needed.

  • Ability to work independently
  • Effective communication, organization, and documentation skills
  • Proficient knowledge and use of information technology

EDUCATION: Graduate of a college or university with a bachelor's degree in forestry.

Working Conditions
Work is typically performed outdoors on private forest lands. Work can be under adverse conditions due to weather, topography, or when suppressing wild land fires. Work also involves frequent contact with citizens and organizations in the promotion of forestry programs.
