Post 6-Month Probation: $2,958 per month/ $17.07 per hour

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The Technician I is responsible for the proficient operation of the tire and service bays. Performs basic mechanical work, effecting minor repairs related to preventive maintenance and safety inspection. Participates in trainings targeting comprehensive repair and fabrication. Must be willing to adopt and exhibit the City of Brownwood “I SERVE” Core Values.

EXAMPLES OF SPECIFIC WORK PERFORMED:

1) Repair tires knowledgeably and efficiently; 2) Mount and balance tires; 3) Maintain tire bay area, equipment and tire truck, keeping them neat and clean; 4) Perform preventive maintenance which includes service and safety inspections; 5) Maintain service bay and equipment in a neat and clean manner; 6) Keep preventive maintenance card file updated and accurate; 7) Monitor fuel levels (stick fuel tanks) at least once a week; 8) Respond to tire related service calls, and other service calls as assigned; 9) Assist Technician II & III as needed; 10) Process paperwork, primarily work orders, in a timely and accurate manner; 11) Participates in training as assigned; 12) Complete continued education courses and become certified in areas consistent with expertise; 13) Perform other duties as assigned.

PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:

Ability to transport self from site to site. Ability to drive various types of equipment and vehicles to and from various worksites. Employee will work in extreme temperatures, standing, walking, bending, kneeling, twisting, climbing, and lifting in order to maintain or repair the City’s fleet. Employee will work with chemicals, mechanical, electrical and traffic hazards. Employee will work in confined spaces, trenches and in streets where extreme hazards exist while performing duties. Employee is frequently required to perform heavy lifting and carrying of materials weighing up to 50 pounds. Employee will be exposed to poor lighting, dirt, dust, noises, fumes, odors, water, and mud. Employee must be able to walk on slippery, loose, uneven, and sloped surfaces. The machinery operated can be dangerous unless operated in a safe manner.

CONTACT WITH OTHERS:

In daily contact with persons who operate equipment, no contact with the public except on rare occasions.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Must have enough education to read & write effectively for this position; must be able to comprehend and speak the English language; a high school diploma or G.E.D. is a plus but not required. Prefer one year or more experience in mechanical equipment maintenance and tire repair of all types.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Must have the ability to: 1) read, write and interpret instructions for repairs, service schedules, reports, material tickets and work orders; 2) to inspect a vehicle, diagnose the problem and make repairs in a timely manner; 3) to operate various types of equipment; 4) to work independent of direct supervision, be a self-starter; 5) to keep a clean, safe work area and maintain the tools provided by the City of Brownwood.

REQUIRED LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES:

Valid Texas Class C Driver’s license.
