Federal Defender Services of Idaho (FDSI) is accepting applications for the position of Fellowship Attorney in our Boise trial unit. FDSI operates under the authority of the Criminal Justice Act, 18 U.S.C. § 3006A, to provide defense services to indigent persons in federal criminal cases and related matters in the federal courts. We have trial units in Boise and Pocatello and a capital habeas unit in Boise. This Boise trial unit position is for one year but may be extended.

Job description. This position is for a licensed attorney with a demonstrated commitment to provide professional legal representation to indigent persons charged with criminal offenses in the United States District Court for the District of Idaho. We are a tight-knit office of dedicated defense lawyers who want to work with someone equally committed to the zealous representation of indigent people charged with serious crimes. This is a unique opportunity to gain federal experience. The lawyer selected for this position will handle an introductory federal caseload including initial appearances, supervised release violations, immigration cases and research and writing projects. We pursue excellence in every aspect of the practice of criminal law, from the first appearance and release hearing, through aggressive motions practice, negotiation, trial, mitigation, sentencing, and appeals. The ideal candidate for this job is devoted to their clients and passionate about the art of criminal defense.

Requirements. Applicants must be (1) a graduate of an accredited law school; (2) admitted to practice and in good standing before the highest court of a state; and (3) licensed to practice in the U.S. District Court by the time of entrance on duty. Candidates must have at least one to two years’ experience in trial work or other related work.
