SUMMARY OF POSITION:

The Medical Assistant must show an uncompromising commitment to providing the highest quality of patient care by being an integral part of the clinical team. Medical Assistants are under the general and direct supervision of the Office Manager. The Medical Assistant prepares the patient for the physician and will perform their duties to the full level in accordance with NYS guidelines as outlined below.

REQUIREMENTS:

Prep:

  • Prepares exam rooms for use following Vanguard 's protocol including: disinfecting, stocking all rooms, checking vaccinations and medications available for the day.
  • Responsible for Practice Health & Safety Assessment tasks such as log keeping, sample medication cabinet, etc.
  • Clean, set up, and prepare equipment and supplies for use.
  • Checks equipment to assure accuracy.
  • Provides pre-visit planning.
  • Stores all supplies and specimens properly as per guidelines.
  • Performs laboratory test procedures within established criteria. Including but not limited to:
  • Performing Quality controls as per NYS guidelines.
  • Maintaining logs with accurate documentation.
  • Follow NY state guidelines for CLIA waived testing.
  • Adheres to safety and scientifically accepted infection control practices and standards. Including but not limited to:
  • Follows handwashing protocols.
  • Practices aseptic techniques.
  • Utilizes protective barriers.
  • Utilizes personal protective equipment, e.g. gloves, lab coats.
  • Maintains proper disposal of hazardous materials.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of role in emergency disaster.
  • Adheres to OSHA Blood Born Pathogen Standard.

Patient Care:

  • Demonstrates courtesy to the patient at all times, incorporating

C-I-CARE into all patient interactions.

  • Follows National Patient Safety Goals, using two patient identifiers at all times.
  • Provides a comfortable and safe environment.
  • Responsible for recording chief complaint in medical record.
  • Assists physician with examination and treatment within scope of practice.
  • Demonstrates awareness of patients’ limitations and plans accordingly.
  • Prepares patient for examination and treatment.
  • Performs EKG as directed.
  • Instructs patients on H poluri breath test pre and post instructions.
  • Collects specimens such as blood and urine and records the results in the patient’s medical record for the prescriber to review.
  • Labels all specimens appropriately using two patient identifiers.

HIPAA REQUIREMENT:

Comply with all Vanguard policies related to privacy rules established under the Health Information Privacy and Portability Act of 1996 (HIPAA).

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School Graduate or equivalent.
  • Certificate in Medical Technology or a minimum of 6 months experience preferred.
  • Phlebotomy Certificate preferred.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Ability to function as an effective team member. Works well alongside physicians, nurses and other ancillary staff.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, or schedule form.
  • Ability to learn and adapt.
  • Ability to direct others.
  • Knowledge of EMR.
  • Skilled in operation of tools and equipment.

PERFORMANCE ASSESSMENTS:

  • Prompt and regular attendance according to policy
  • Comply with dress code and appearance standards.
  • Interact with patients, customers, management, team members the general public, in a professional, courteous, and tactful manner.
  • Functions and communicates respectfully with peers.
  • Covering each other during breaks, helping to draw bloods outside of daily assignments
  • Work with integrity, uphold Vanguard's mission, values, and maintain confidentiality in all situations.
  • Follow safety & security policies & procedures, immediately reporting suspicious activities and unsafe conditions.
  • Participate in all mandatory job training and meetings.
  • Adhere to requirements, policies and procedures outlined in the Employee Handbook and/or other clinical practices.
  • Completes annual competencies.
