The Public Works Department strives to improve the quality of life in Phoenix through efficient delivery of outstanding solid waste, fleet, facilities, and energy management services.

Equipment Service Worker I's are responsible for routine automotive and small landscape equipment preventive maintenance, repairing and balancing equipment tires and simple mechanical repairs. The Equipment Service Worker I assists Heavy Equipment and Auto Technicians with fleet repairs. Routine manual tasks involve the operation and transporting of automotive and light truck equipment; fuel site inspections; servicing pool vehicles, including washing and fueling as needed, and ordering and stocking shop supplies.

Positions may transport parts; conduct minor janitorial duties, clean shop floors and aprons, and maintain shop equipment (such as floor jacks, jack stands, and battery chargers); operate forklift trucks for loading and unloading merchandise; review and record motor pool vehicle usage; track mileage and keys that are overdue; road test vehicles to ensure repairs have been satisfactorily completed; inspect for and repair vehicle mechanical defects. Additionally, some positions are responsible for Hazardous Material Waste and Storm Water Inspection compliance.

IDEAL CANDIDATE

  • The ability to carry out verbal and written instructions in the English language.
  • The ability to move heavy objects (50 pounds or more) long distances (greater than 20 feet), bend or stoop repeatedly over time, and work in small, cramped areas to perform repairs.

SALARY


$16.90 (minimum) - $19.94 (maximum) hourly / $35,152.00 - $41,475.20 annually. Candidates may be hired up to $41,475.20 depending upon qualifications.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Knowledge of general maintenance and the performance of routine service on automotive equipment and parts.

  • Some positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.
  • This position is subject to Criminal Justice Information Systems (CJIS) background standards. Candidates who receive a conditional offer of employment must be fingerprinted and will have their fingerprints used to check the Criminal History Records of the State of Arizona Department of Public Safety and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Any records returned will be reviewed to determine the candidate’s suitability for the job.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS


The minimum qualifications listed above, plus:

  • Experience performing minor mechanical repairs with common mechanic hand tools (such as air tools, wrenches, socket sets, pliers, screwdrivers, etc.).
  • Experience diagnosing tire wear due to air pressure and wheel alignment.
  • Experience removing and replacing wheels and tires, and familiarity with the methods, machines, and tools used in wheel balancing practices.
  • Experience operating a computerized work order system, such as Faster, Asset Works, etc.
  • Experience performing state emissions inspections.
