POSITION SUMMARY:

Responsible for operation of heavy mobile equipment such as excavators, backhoes, and other heavy and light construction and maintenance equipment and serves as a lead worker in the repair, maintenance, and construction of wastewater collection and distribution facilities. These facilities include channels, creeks, ditches, and other waterways; manholes, drain inlets, and underground pipelines; levees, water quality basins, and detention basins; and drainage facility appurtenances.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Drives, operates and is responsible for the safe operation of specialized equipment, including but not limited to backhoes, track hoes, dump trucks, frontend loaders, and flush vac equipment
  • Assist field crews with installation, repair, maintenance of the water and wastewater infrastructure
  • Independently performs assigned work specific to the water distribution and sewer collection system
  • Provides on-the-job training to lower level personnel and may be called upon to direct the work of other employees and crew members
  • Refers to city maps, blueprints or manuals. Work assignments in the form of oral and written instructions are generally broad and the employee must use judgment to select the appropriate procedures to follow
  • Completes routine tasks in a professional and timely manner while responding to specific calls from customers and crew members. The employee is also expected to keep the supervisor informed of work progress and specific problems identified
  • Investigates citizen complaints and takes or recommends appropriate action, provides routine information or specific details to routine inquiries
  • Progressive knowledge of geographic layout of the City
  • Maintains and inspects vehicles and performs safety checks daily
    • Maintains records of work performed for supervisor such as vehicle check list and repair reports
  • Follows and upholds City and departmental rules, regulations, policies and procedures
  • Reports to work free from the effects of drugs or controlled substances or alcohol, and free from impairment due to prescription drugs
  • Essential personnel may require 24-hour call-out for emergency or hazardous situations.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned
  • The City reserves the right to require an employee in this position to work overtime including during emergency situations (defined as any natural or man-made disaster that may or may not necessitate the relocation of City personnel or citizens). In the event of an emergency or a required evacuation, the incumbent may be required to remain at work to provide needed services or perform essential duties for the benefit of the public including services or duties different from those performed in the normal course and scope of the position

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Documentary evidence of graduation from an accredited high school or successful completion of the General Educational Development (GED) Test
  • One (1) year experience in construction, maintenance, or operation of heavy mobile equipment
  • Two (2) years of experience operating heavy mobile equipment

LICENSES, CERTIFICATES, AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS

  • Valid Texas Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL)
    • Reliable transportation and liability insurance and personal insurance coverage
  • Appointment will be conditional upon successful completion of the following pre-employment checks:
    • Criminal background check
    • Texas Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Driving History Background
    • Controlled substance screening
