The North Dakota Department of Environmental Quality is seeking an Environmental Scientist to join our team. Summary of Work

This position is with the Solid Waste Program. The person selected will be responsible for performing duties as an on-site inspector at the regional municipal solid waste landfill facility to evaluate compliance with the North Dakota Solid Waste Rules and with the facility’s Solid Waste Permit. This person will also evaluate solid waste activities, including responding to complaints and evaluating clean-up of contaminant releases within a multi-county area around Gwinner, ND. The person selected will be provided an office at the facility near Gwinner, ND.

Responsibilities of the position include:

  • Conducting facility inspections.
  • Compliance assessment and tracking.
  • Assist in review of plans, specifications and reports.
  • Coordinating environmental assessments and cleanups.
  • Assist in collection of water and soil samples for field and laboratory testing.
  • Provide technical assistance to facility owners and operators regarding the state rules and regulations.
  • Input and analysis of data collected and received for the program database.
  • Responding to citizen complaints.

Minimum Qualifications

Requires an Associate's degree and two years of related work experience or a bachelor's degree. Starting salary is $4,003/month.

For well qualified applicants, the department will consider filling the position as an Environmental Scientist II which requires an Associate's degree and three years of related work experience or a bachelor’s degree and one year of related work experience. Starting salary for an Environmental Scientist II is $4,780/month.

Applicants must have a valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle for use in job activities (mileage reimbursed at state rate).

Desirable Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Work experience or knowledge in solid waste management, waste sampling, landfill design and operation, geology, soils, and groundwater chemistry.
  • Skill in reviewing, analyzing and resolving environmental problems, and in gathering information and data for preparing reports.
  • Ability to interpret regulations and provide guidance and assistance on policies and procedures for achieving and maintaining compliance.
  • Considerable knowledge in environmental sciences, natural or physical sciences, engineering, or related curriculum.
  • Understand the basic principles and concepts associated with environmental issues and systems.
  • Computer skills including usage of databases and spreadsheets.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.

Comments

This position is located in Gwinner, ND.

Statewide travel including overnight stays is required. Out-of-state training or meetings may occur occasionally.
