The English as a Second Language (ESL) - Off Site Teaching Assistant assists students and instructors in the English as a Second Language program at off campus locations. Under the general direction of the ESL Site Coordinator, the Teaching Assistant will facilitate the appraisal and registration of new students, completion of all student intake paperwork, administer standardized online tests, and assist instructor and students as directed by the instructor.

Essential Functions

The English as a Second Language (ESL) - Off Site Teaching Assistant will be responsible for the following, but not limited to:

Student Support Services


  • Welcome and assistant new students in the intake process, provide basic information about the classes, and inform new students about the English evaluation process.
  • Proctor online English appraisal tests that determine students' English levels and thus determine in which classes students will be enrolled.
  • Assist students in completing registration forms and intake paperwork.
  • Administer state required online standardized tests quarterly.
  • Assist instructor and students under the direction of instructor, working one-on-one with students, working with students in small groups, assisting students in navigating computers, and onboarding new students.

Qualifications

Education Required


  • High School diploma or GED.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience working with students; preferably English as a Second Language students in a higher education environment.
Special Requirements
  • The successful candidate must consent to and pass a criminal background check after a conditional offer of employment.

Terms of Employment

This is a part-time hourly position with Pierce College District, expected to work in support of students during college quarters. Must be flexible and willing to work during campus school hours or evenings.

Please Note:

If you have held a part-time hourly, or temporary position, after July 1, 2022 within Pierce College, you will not qualify for the position and therefore will not be considered, per WAC 357-04-045

The provisions of WAC 357-04-045 requires:
  • The employee is employed twelve consecutive months or less;
  • The employee is employed for one thousand fifty hours (1050) or less in that same twelve consecutive month period which begins from the original date of hire or July 1, 2022, whichever is later; and
  • The employee is limited to one appointment only with the same higher education employer that meets the criteria in (a) and (b) of this subsection.
Salary& Benefits

The salary for this position is $15.74 hourly to $17.75 hourly. This position is not eligible for retirement or healthcare benefits.

Physical Work Environment

This position will work inside in a classroom environment at one or more of the Pierce College District campus and offsite locations .
