Duke Energy will offer relocation assistance if you are selected for the role and do not live within a reasonable commute of the work location. The physical work location for this position is St. Petersburg and Crystal River Florida.
This position is for the role of Mechanical Engineer on the Regulated & Renewable Energy (RRE) Central Operational Services & Oversight (COSO) Mechanical and Chemical Balance of Plant (BOP) Engineering Services Team in Florida. COSO Engineering provides project engineering and equipment inspection support for power plant systems and equipment at generating facilities (Coal, Combined Cycle, Natural Gas, Solar, and Simple Cycle) across the Florida service territory. This role will also support resolution of technical issues and provide technical support for emergent or medium-term plant issues as needed.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Provide technical support, specifications, and consultation for Balance of Plant equipment.
  • Conduct equipment inspections and provide detailed reports.
  • Provide project engineering support for the regional outages and projects teams which encompasses conceptual design, Engineering evaluations, design change process, design change risk and reviews, configuration management, testing, and commissioning.
  • Support the mechanical projects and troubleshooting needs of the plant
  • Provide mechanical engineering technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis, and resolution of routine problems
  • Enhance mechanical engineering knowledge base and skillset
  • Assist in the accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling, and monitoring of work activities under the guidance of higher-level employees
  • Prepare/Maintain thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations, and sketches associated with the resolution of routine technical problems
  • Possess knowledge of electrical concepts, practices, and procedures
  • Conduct basic engineering studies requiring little evaluation or ingenuity
  • Develop positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities
  • Demonstrate effective oral and written communication skills
  • Support the company's goals and represents the company positively and professionally
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS FOR THE ENGINEER LEVEL I POSITION:
  • High School/GED
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited program
  • In lieu of Bachelor of Science degree, Master’s degree in Engineering
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Mechanical Engineering Degree
  • Additional years of Mechanical experience
  • Ability to work with PLC controls systems
  • Experience with data links/interface devices such as MODBUS, PLCs, RTAC, TCP/IP, etc.
  • Understanding of basic practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations, and preparing and presenting recommendations
  • Ability to work with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds
  • Passing grade on the Engineering Fundamentals Exam
  • Understanding of basic principles of project management.
  • Experience in the utility industry
  • Good written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to analyze processes and equipment through historical data systems
  • Computer skills including Microsoft Applications and Maximo (maintenance management system)
WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • Valid Drivers License required
  • Hybrid Mobility Classification – Work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. However, hybrid employees should live within a reasonable daily commute to a Duke Energy facility.
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment background check, drug test, Audiometric and Lead Surveillance Medical Vision

  • Perform work in a power plant and office environment
  • Power plant environment with exposure to hot and cold temperatures, humidity, noise, dust, fumes, confined spaces, and heights.
  • Working around pressurized, rotating, and energized equipment.
  • Required to climb ladders and stairs at various heights, enter vessels or equipment with limited access, walk, stoop, lift, bend, crawl and/or squat.
  • Required to be available for emergency response (callouts) as needed for outage or emergent problems.
  • Base for this position is St. Petersburg, FL or Crystal River, FL . The hiring manager may elect to base this position at other Florida offices or generating stations.
  • Expected to travel to various generating station mostly within the Florida region
