Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

The University of Maryland (UMD) seeks an enthusiastic and motivated individual with excellent interpersonal, communication, and critical thinking skills as Emergency Preparedness and Continuity Specialist. This position reports to the Director and supports the Office of Emergency Management and Business Continuity through the development and execution of preparedness, response, and recovery programs for UMD.


Join a dynamic small team in a world-class university serving the campus community as we develop, maintain, and implement university-wide and departmental emergency plans and programs in partnership with university stakeholders. The Specialist supports emergency operations by assisting with the coordination of campus-level response activities. This individual must be available after hours, including holidays and weekends, for 24-hour on-call response to perform emergency management functions and related duties.


Example responsibilities include the following: Participate in the development, maintenance, and implementation of university-wide and departmental emergency plans and programs in partnership with university stakeholders. Collaborate with university stakeholders to discuss emergency management-related programs. Prepare meeting summaries, reports, plans, presentations, and other documents. Guide departments to create continuity plans by conducting education and orientation sessions, consulting with and coaching department leadership and planning teams as they analyze processes and identify essential functions. Monitor plan development progress, review completed plans, and provide feedback to improve recovery planning. Conduct outreach and education to the campus community through presentations, trainings, exercises, and conversations with UMD employees and students. Represent OEMBC at campus outreach events. Support UMD during emergency operations by assisting with the coordination of campus-level response activities. Must be available for 24-hour on-call response during emergencies to perform emergency management functions and related duties. Assist with incident documentation and develop after-action reports in collaboration with internal and external stakeholders. Manage the team’s project tracking and other systems. Perform other duties as assigned.

Starting compensation is expected to be in the range of $86,000 – $107,000.


Minimum Qualifications:
Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university
  • Three years’ work experience in emergency management and/or business continuity
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Demonstrated knowledge of emergency management and/or business continuity
  • Strong interpersonal, team work, and collaboration skills; ability to effectively build positive relationships and work with a variety of individuals with varying backgrounds and interests
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; demonstrated ability to develop and deliver professional presentations and provide effective trainings to diverse audiences
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and to manage multiple concurrent tasks and responsibilities, sometimes under difficult circumstances and during changing conditions (e.g., emergencies)
  • Demonstrated ability to use discretion and maintain confidentiality
  • Ability to produce high-quality deliverables under tight deadlines


Preferences:
Preferred Education and Experience:
  • Master’s degree in emergency management
  • Familiarity with Everbridge or other emergency notification systems
  • Experience creating outreach and communication materials
  • Experience facilitating meetings and/or group discussions
