Under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse, performs according to department policies and procedures, completed competencies, and certification. Functions as a member of the patient care team to provide basic patient care services and procedures to a wide variety of medical conditions that are seen in the Emergency Room.

Responsibilities:
Under the direct supervision of the RN provides indirect care that supports the Emergency Department mission by:
  • PARTICIPATION:

o in cost containment

o development/maintenance of positive work environment

o minimizing overtime

o attending required classes and meetings

o participating in unit committees

o adheres to all policies and procedures

  • PROMOTING PATIENT SAFETY:

o applies protective devices correctly

o anticipates patient request, makes rounds every hour as a minimum

o assists RN in planning patient care

o maintains a safe unit environment

  • PROMOTING INFECTION CONTROL:

o washes hands before and after patient contact

o handles soiled linen, equipment and instruments per protocol

o maintains sterile asepsis

o changes and secures dressings

o maintains isolation technique

  • PROMOTING PERSONAL SAFETY:

o utilizes p.p.e. appropriately

o keeps hallways clear of furniture/equipment, everything on one side

  • PROVIDES DAILY INVENTORY MAINTENANCE:

o maintains support areas (kitchen, nurses’ station, utility rooms) clean/stocked

o restocks equipment in patient rooms

o accountable for wheelchairs, thermometers and other pertinent equipment

o completes appropriate work form for maintenance and clinical engineering service, equipment work orders, including removing from service

Provides direct patient care that demonstrates our mission and values. Evidenced by:
  • PROVIDES CARE AS DIRECTED:

o Perform pulse oximetry

o Foley catheter, straight cath insertion/placement, minicath – excludes children and infants

o performs and documents selected diagnostic tests – phlebotomy & 12-lead ECG recording

o performs lab testing as appropriate

o provides care for the patient requiring restraint or seclusion

o Performs splint application

o Possesses knowledge and skills necessary to obtain adequate lab specimens for testing.

o Performs patient bedside lab testing and associated quality control in compliance with medical provider’s orders and hospital lab procedures/policies.

  • PROVIDES OBSERVATION AND MEASUREMENT OF PATIENT INFORMATION PER POLICY:

o temperatures - oral, rectal (axillary only under the direction of RN)

o Pulse - apical and radial,

o Blood pressure,

o height and weight,

o intake and output,

o pain ratings

Demonstrates a thorough understanding and working knowledge of all equipment necessary to perform job functions. Performs and documents special procedures per policy:
  • application of heat/cold
  • decubitus care
  • pelvic exam setup
  • I & D setup
  • surgical skin prep
  • apply ace/TEDS/binders
  • apply/remove leads
  • assist coughing & deep breathing
  • assist with physical exam
  • maintain and clean suction equipment
  • application of hypo/hyperthermia unit
  • care of oxygen equipment.
  • room set-up for trauma
  • suture set-up
  • moderate sedation set-up
  • patient prep for any procedure
  • Demonstrates a practical problem-solving approach to patient moving and handling issues.
  • Demonstrates skills to promote patient and staff safety through appropriate use of lift equipment.

Performs direct patient care that significantly impacts patient satisfaction evidenced by:
  • PROMOTION OF PATIENT WELLNESS:

o maintain a pleasant environment for patients by keeping rooms visually clean and uncluttered

o ready to monitor patient post-procedure

o participates in admission, transport and discharge of patients

  • assist patients with -in-bed mobility; transfers to/from bed, WC, stretcher, or chair; positioning for alignment and comfort
  • ASSIST PATIENTS WITH NUTRITION MANAGEMENT:

o prepares patients for meals by offering washing of hands, mouth care and positioning in chair or bed before meal tray arrives

o delivers trays

o documents intake per policy

o feeds dependent patients as needed

o provides fresh water, ice and snacks.

  • PROVIDES ASSISTANCE WITH ELIMINATION PROCEDURES:

o offers/removes bedpans and urinals

o provides catheter care per policy

o removes Foley catheters

o Applies external urinary catheters

o empty urinary drainage bags using goggles and gloves

o collect specimens for ordered tests

o catheterize female and male patients

o communicates any intake and output

  • Completes all annual education and competency requirements within the calendar year.
  • Is knowledgeable of hospital and department compliance requirements for federally funded healthcare programs (e.g. Medicare and Medicaid) regarding fraud, waste and abuse. Brings any questions or concerns regarding compliance to the immediate attention of hospital administrative staff. Takes appropriate action on concerns reported by department staff related to compliance.

Qualifications:

Education:


High School graduate or GED equivalent

Completion of an approved training course for Emergency Medical Technician, Medical Office Assistant, Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), Phlebotomy or successful completion of first semester of nursing theory.


Experience:


Minimum of one year of acute care or hospital experience.


1-3 years of experience in/with EMT or CNA preferred.


License(s)/Certification(s):


Must possess and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification within 30 days of hire/start date.


Crisis Training certification within one year of hire/start date.


Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:


Completion of Phlebotomy competency validation within 6 months.
