POSITION DESCRIPTION

Position: Communications Officer Reports to: Communications Corporal

Objective

Support the protection of life and property in the community through emergency call-taking and support services.

Supervision-Responsibility for work of others

No responsibility for the direction or supervision of others.

General Description

Under the general supervision of a Communications Corporal, receives emergency and administrative telephone calls for service, creates call for service based upon necessary emergency response, and works closely with other Communications Officers to provide necessary support for police, fire, medical, and other related services. Actual duties and workload vary according to assigned shift. Personal conduct (on-duty as well as off-duty) must be such that it does not bring disrepute or unnecessarily endanger the public’s trust or confidence in the agency or its members.

  • Effectively, efficiently, and courteously utilize the department’s phone systems and interact with persons seeking assistance.
  • Successfully employ the strategy of active listening in order to effectively handle calls for service and other interpersonal activities.
  • The ability to effectively engage in more than one activity at a time.
  • Make timely notifications as required or directed.
  • Efficiently and properly utilize the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) system and the Kansas Criminal Justice Information System (KCJIS) network to accomplish job tasks.
  • Effectively utilize, manage, and update all dispatch resources.
  • Correctly complete a task in a timely manner.
  • Completely and factually document information and data without duplication.
  • Effectively utilize the department’s administrative and 911 phone systems, radio communications systems, Telecommunications Device for the Deaf (TDD), siren activation system, paging systems, Computer Aided Dispatch system, various mapping resources, and records management system to accomplish job tasks.
  • Fully and accurately complete all required paper and on-line forms. Forms include but are not limited to, National Crime Information Center (NCIC) forms, wrecker logs, case logs, EMS time logs, III/KBI logs, Crimestoppers forms, and timesheets.
  • Possess and maintain the physical ability necessary to complete the essential duties of the position.
  • Maintain an acceptable level of availability for work to include rotating shifts, evenings, weekends, holidays, and emergency call-in for emergency situations.

Other/Marginal Duties

  • Complete assigned and self-initiated workloads in a punctual and professional manner.
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as needed or assigned including general cleaning, emptying trash, and other housekeeping duties.

General Requirements

Must be 18 years of age at the time of hire

US Citizen

No felony or serious misdemeanor convictions

Education/Experience

High School Diploma or general equivalency diploma (GED)

License or Certification

Ability to secure and maintain required certifications for emergency medical dispatching (EMD) to include bi-annual cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training. Enter continuing education hours into necessary computer systems. Secure and maintain bi-annual security awareness and NCIC full access certifications.

Computer/Automation

  • Knowledge of general computer software programs (Word and Excel) and the ability to learn other sheriff’s office communication, operating systems and related software.
  • Ability to work with various types of computer hardware and other computer related equipment and possess basic computer data entry skills.
  • Ability to type an acceptable number of words per minute.

Physical/Physiological

  • The ability to hear, read, comprehend, and carry out written instructions in English.
  • The ability to coordinate hands and eyes in using automated office equipment and phone and radio communication.
  • Perform all duties in a professional manner during high stress and emotional situations. Effectively cope with stress and discuss job stressors when necessary.

Physical Demands of Essential Job Functions

A maximum occasional lift of 5lbs from Floor-Waist, Sit, stand and bilateral hand coordination continuous. Walk and forward reach are occasional. PDC Level: Sedentary
