Special Education Instructional Coordinator Job Description (2023- 2024 School Year)

Job Summary:

Under direct supervision of the Assistant Principal, the Special Education Instructional Coordinator will support special education instruction designed to meet State of Nevada as well as federal standards for special education students at Amplus Academy. The role of the Special Education Instructional Coordinator is to be an educational leader and advocate for students with disabilities within the school setting. They will actively support the assigned campus(es) to ensure that a strong commitment to improving academic and social achievement of students with disabilities is evident. The Special Education Instructional Coordinator collaborates with appropriate individuals so that the educational needs of students with disabilities are appropriately addressed and in compliance with school procedures as well as applicable federal and state laws. The Special Education Instructional Coordinator coordinates the IEP teams, reviews IEP plans, and meets other requirements specified below.

The Special Education Instructional Coordinator is expected to adhere to Amplus Academy's professional standards as well as Nevada Department of Education licensure standards. Amplus Academy is a classical education charter school located in the southwest area of Las Vegas; Amplus Academy has two campuses serving Kindergarten-12th grade students.

Terms of Employment: 190 contracted work days

Salary: The compensation for this position is in alignment with the Amplus Governing Board approved Salary Schedule; Salary Schedule based on years experience and degree held. Compensation for all positions are determined by the Governing Board and Administration of Amplus Academy. Consideration is given for experience and specialized skills in determining salary.

Salary Range: $64,000.00- $85,000.00

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Works with supervising administrator to interviews, hire, and train special education teachers and program staff

  • Supervise Special Program Teaching Assistants (SPTAs)

  • Conducts coaching evaluations that are timely and constructive

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Works with Principal and Supervising Administrator to develop and execute a special education program that focuses on integration, inclusion, and learning opportunities for all students

  • Supports, mentors, and models best practice instructional strategies and techniques

  • Exhibits a strong commitment to improving academic and social achievement for students with disabilities

  • Ensures that policies and procedures are implemented and performed in compliance with applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations

  • Effectively communicates special education procedures and best practices to administration and staff through regular staff meetings

  • Facilitates staff development activities related to students with disabilities for administration, licensed, and support staff

  • Informs site administration of special education concerns/issues that may be supervisory in nature

  • Assists division and region teams, administration, licensed, and support staff with the effective implementation of federal, state, and local mandates

  • Ensures that students with disabilities are receiving a free and appropriate education in the least restrictive environment

  • Assists parents in problem solving and acquiring the necessary knowledge and skills to support the development and implementation of their childs Individualized Education Plan (IEP)

  • Communicates with parents, caregivers, and other stakeholders to explain educational programs and to answer questions

  • Provides staff with information on scientifically-based instruction, positive behavioral supports (including Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), etc.), and other effective classroom management techniques.

  • Assists licensed staff in providing technical information, preparing IEPs, and/or referrals for additional/alternative academic and/or positive behavioral supports

  • Monitors, on a regularly scheduled basis, confidential folders and IEPs to ensure accuracy, completeness, and compliance

  • Maintains confidentiality and organization of records through observable procedures consistent with division and site directives

  • Collaborates with licensed staff and administration when designing class schedules as it relates to students with disabilities

  • Builds and maintains relationships in the community to foster understanding of and support for special education programs

  • Assists IEP teams in the development and implementation of transition plans

  • Effectively uses and train building staff to use the divisions electronic IEP system

  • Works cooperatively with administration regarding compliance issues and provide necessary support to remedy the non-compliance

  • Works professionally with administrators, staff, parents, and the community

  • Travel between the two campuses as needed to coordinate between the other SEICs and Special Education personnel

  • Maintains current knowledge of laws and regulations related to special education

  • Participates in other job-related duties and activities related to the position, as assigned

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Demonstrate ability to support, mentor, and model best practice instructional strategies specifically designed for students with disabilities

  • Demonstrate strong knowledge of federal, state, and local mandates and procedures as it relates to students with disabilities

  • Demonstrate strong knowledge of special education programs and services in Amplus Academy and the community

  • Demonstrate effectiveness in planning, organizing, and coordinating meaningful activities for appropriate individuals and/or groups in a pleasant, professional manner

  • Exhibit proficiency in the use of the Amplus Academys electronic IEP system using Infinite Campus

  • Lead professional development activities for staff as they relate to special education

  • Work cooperatively with students, parents, peers, administration, and community members

  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the proven ability to maintain professionalism and tact in high-stress situations

  • Ability to negotiate with people with different or opposing viewpoints

  • Maintain accurate and complete records as required by law and Amplus Academy policy

  • Participate as an active member with other faculty and staff

  • Work in a collegial manner with all Amplus Academy staff to provide students an appropriate education in the least restrictive environment

  • Maintain and improve professional competence

  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with students, staff, parents and other stakeholders

  • Creative analytical and problem-solving skills

  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, Google Classroom or related software

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelors degree and Nevada Special Education License required, Masters degree preferred

  • Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) crisis intervention training and CPR/ First Aid training required

  • At least five (5) years experience in special education, preferably in a supervisory role

  • Working knowledge of Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) required

  • This type of work requires occasional or frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling during crisis scenarios such as hard lockdowns, earthquake drills, etc.

  • Sufficient manual dexterity and/or mobility to grasp and/or manipulate objects, operate mechanical equipment, and move about the work area.

  • Ability to operate, activate and use a computer and other office productivity machinery such as a calculator, copy machine and printer.

  • Employees in this classification may be subject to work environments that have exposure to weather or interiors with extremes of heat and/or cold, wet and/or humid conditions, temperature fluctuations, high noise levels, and various work related hazards such as bloodborne pathogens or other potentially infectious materials.
