Missouri Western State University, located in St. Joseph, MO, just 45 minutes north of Kansas City, is accepting applications for a Director of Sports Performance to join our Athletic Department.

Missouri Western is an NCAA Division II institution, which successfully competes in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) in 16 sports and Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) in 1 sport.

The Director of Sports Performance administers and coordinates the operations and personnel of the department and provides individualized instruction in sports performance programs to student athletes.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES :
  • Develop sports performance training programs for athletic teams and individual student-athletes.
  • Instruct student-athletes on strength and conditioning exercises, monitoring technique.
  • Collect data through periodic performance evaluations to ensure the proper progression of programming and to measure the positive annual increases in athletic performance for all student-athletes.
  • Hire, train, and manage departmental staff members.
  • Communicate as necessary with Sports Medicine Staff/Sport Coaches regarding the health and injury status of student-athletes to help better make decisions regarding their training.
  • Coordinate the weight room schedule.
  • Conduct daily/weekly/monthly meetings with each Sports Coach depending on whether the sport is ‘in-season’ or ‘off-season.’
  • Assist in the education of student-athletes on topics related to their health and wellness, including but not limited to, nutrition and sleep.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the Director of Athletics.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of best practices in relation to sports injury assessment, treatment, management, and rehabilitation.
  • Knowledge of the applicable laws related to medical information, including, but not limited to, HIPPA (The Health Insurance Portabiity and Accountablity Act of 1996).
  • Knowledge of physiology, biomechanics, and the concept of stress.
  • Ability to coach large groups of student-athletes together.
  • Knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office programs and other general office equipment.
  • Organized thinker with exceptional attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to effectively organize and prioritize work as well as concentrate on multiple tasks simultaneously.

Required Qualifications
  • This position requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Education, Exercise Science, Kinesiology, or a related field.
  • Must have five to ten years of experience in developing individual and group strength and conditioning programs.
  • Must have SCCC Certification (Strength & Conditioning Coach Certified).
  • Must have certification in one or both of the following:
    • Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) certification through NSCA.
    • Certification from CSCCA (Collegiate Strength & Conditioning Coaches Association)
  • First Aid/CPR certification is required.
  • AED certification is required.
  • Level 1 Certification or Level 1 Sports Performance Coach certification from United States Weightlifting (USAW) is preferred.
  • Valid Driver’s license

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree is preferred

Physical Demands
  • Position requires heavy physical activity, and the ability to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds frequently, and up to 20 pounds constantly to move objects.
  • Must be able to be on feet multiple hours during the day on a multitude of different surfaces
  • Regularly required to talk and hear; frequently required to sit, stand, and bend at the knee and waist, and walk.
  • Must have finger dexterity and hand-eye coordination to work on computer, telephone, and related office equipment.
  • Team travel as assigned by director
