Job Description:


The Director of School Safety and Security will maintain a physically safe environment for students, employees, and visitors by helping to develop, establish, and enforce safety and security policies that support student learning, growth, and success. Under limited supervision, this employee performs supervisory and administrative tasks in developing, implementing, and managing programs designed to effectively address school safety with regards to student’s academic & behavioral needs. Employee is responsible for coordinating a comprehensive school safety program which involves working with school teams on risk management as well as local law enforcement agencies to monitor and coordinate the school resource officer program. Employee also works collaboratively with the district’s mental health coordinator and behavior team to align our school mental health support system & establish procedures for alternative programs. Employee engages in cross-departmental collaboration and works extensively with the Executive Team, school administrators, and the community on all areas of school school safety.


Qualifications


School administration experience and/or experience in a school or district leadership position related to student safety and security.


Essential Functions

  • Set and provide strategic direction and leadership for the overall administration and coordination of the safety program for the district including physical safety, prevention and intervention services, and emergency response and recovery.
  • Coordinate a district-wide comprehensive school safety program, policies and procedures by studying organization operations and schedules; establishing internal controls; conducting inspections as appropriate; reporting potential hazards to appropriate departments; creating and updating Standard Operating Procedures, safety and security manuals.
  • Coordinate school safety and wellbeing compliance with federal, state, and local regulations by studying existing and new requirements and overseeing and enforcing school-wide adherence to requirements.
  • Coordinate safety planning and practice to support each school by assisting with the threat assessment process and assisting district leadership in developing alternative programs for students as an alternative to long term suspension.
  • Conduct and coordinate safety, security, and emergency preparedness training by developing, scheduling and or/facilitating training for staff, students, and public safety officials relating to school safety, security, and emergency preparedness.
  • Secure facilities, equipment, students, and personnel by working in conjunction with the appropriate departments in recommending safety and security equipment purchases and upgrades; maintaining records of fire and other emergency drills; and conducting drills & audits.
  • Build processes that use data to evaluate safety effectiveness and drive results aligned to safety and security priorities.
  • Make data-based decisions about how to organize and strategically align district resources to maximize the physical safety of students, staff, and the school communities.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of safety plans for special events (large- and small-scale drills, reunification, crisis response) involving school facilities within MGSD.
  • Coordinate with site-based administrators, facility and maintenance departments to address and correct safety/security issues on school campus.
  • Monitor and assist with programs that reports school safety issues (i.e. Gaggle and See Something Say Something, etc.).
  • Serve as liaison with other agencies such as NC Department of Public Instruction, NC Department of Public Safety, NC Center for Prevention of School Violence, Mooresville Police Department, School Resource Officers, Juvenile Crime Prevention Council, and other community partners to provide resources and information related to school safety.
  • Provide guidance and support to MGSD during school crisis and emergency situations and work closely with all areas within MGSD.
  • Facilitate the long term suspension process and provide support for the District Safety Committee, and other safety related initiatives. Conduct annual review/revision of the Student Code of Conduct and assist schools in the ongoing implementation of the Student Code of Conduct.
  • Receive all reports of school crime from site-based administrators and maintain statistics regarding this information.
  • Direct the district’s effort to collect and compile the required annual school crime report to the NC Department of Public Instruction in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Participate in annual trainings to stay current on laws, policies, and procedures regarding school safety.
  • Attend school board meetings as necessary.
  • Perform basic personnel administration duties including scheduling, preparing program budgets and related reports.
  • Perform other duties as assigned

  • Must be able to operate a variety of equipment including computers, copiers, etc.
  • Must be able to operate a motor vehicle
  • Must be able to perform basic life operational functions of standing, walking, balancing, stooping, kneeling, reaching pushing, lifting, grasping, talking, hearing and performing repetitive motions
  • Must be able to perform medium work exerting in excess of 50 pounds of force occasionally, and or in excess of 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to lift objects
  • Must possess the visual acuity to prepare data, work with records processes, and do extensive reading and research.
