Summary:
The Director of Practice Management is responsible for the business operations of the litigation and transactional practice groups and the administrative functions that directly support the practices. As the head of practice management, the Director will serve as a change agent to design and deliver solutions that align the firm’s strategic goals and meet client demands. The Director will serve as a champion of the firm’s client service standards (Experience Amplified) and will play a key role in ensuring client service is at the forefront of operational decisions within the practice groups and administrative departments.
The Director of Practice Management is responsible for leading the following administrative functions: Practice Management, Litigation Docketing, and Research and Knowledge Services.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required. Other duties may be assigned.
Staffing and Project Management
  • Manage staffing and workload allocation for attorneys, paralegals and other timekeepers, ensuring the practice groups have sufficient capacity and timekeepers are fully ultilized, while balancing client needs with development goals.
  • Utilize proven project management techniques to support the efficient management of matters through all stages including scoping, framing, budgeting, planning, managing, monitoring and evaluation.
  • Work closely with Practice Group Leaders and liase with Lawyer Talent to identify and manage practice group specific issues related to attorney retention, development, productivity and performance.
Administrative Functions
  • In conjunction with the Paralegal Manager, oversee the paralegal support function, including paralegal staffing, utilization and training and professional development.
  • Oversee the eDiscovery team in conjunction with the firm’s Paralegal Manager and eDiscovery Partner. Develop and implement a plan for recovering the firm’s investment in eDiscovery software and infrastructure necessary to service clients.
  • Oversee the litigation docketing team that is responsible for docketing and calendaring the day-to-day litigation deadlines. Support the Litigation Docketing Manager in developing, maintaining and enforcing docketing policies, procedures and workflows in accordance with rule-based deadlines.
  • Oversee the Research Services and Knowledge Management team. Support the Manager of Research and Knowledge Services to deliver research and knowledge management solutions that provide clients exceptional service and value.
Management and Policy Compliance
  • Provide leadership and management for professional staff in the functions listed above.
  • Partner with other business services teams (Finance/IT/Marketing and Business Development/HR) and vendors to support attorneys and clients.
  • Monitor and enforce timekeeping and billing practices in partnership with the practice group leaders and firm management.
QUALIFICATIONS: To perform the job successfully, an individual should demonstrate the following competencies:
  • Deep knowledge of law firm management metrics and how day-to-day legal practice interacts with those metrics.
  • Strong financial, matter budgeting, analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Able to prioritize and manage multiple complex operations or projects at one time, with continual attention to detail and accuracy with numbers.
  • Ability to compile, analyze and reach conclusions from data related to practice group and knowledge management functions.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with the ability to communicate and present materials and information clearly and confidently.
  • Strong administrative, management, and leadership capabilities, including the ability to:
    • work under limited general direction
    • identify and initiate actions while providing financial, strategic, and tactical guidance to practice group leaders as well as firm management
    • handle difficult and/or confidential financial matters with sensitivity and discretion
    • identify, monitor, and effectively interpret critical information
    • communicate complex financial information and ideas effectively, sometimes with minimal preparation
    • rapidly analyze issues, anticipate consequences, make decisions and initiate action
    • maintain effective, collaborative working relationships and enhance teamwork with all levels of firm personnel
    • evaluate evolving situations and exercise good judgment
    • provide visionary and strategic financial leadership, technical and professional knowledge
    • provide guidance on alternative fee proposals and management of matter profitability
Education and Experience:
  • BA/BS required; MBA and/or JD strongly preferred.
  • Five or more years of supervisory and/or management experience in a professional office setting required.
  • Previous experience in law firm management preferred.
