Job Summary:

Works with Vice President Government and Industry Affairs (GIA) in federal government affairs activities for the Livestock Marketing Association (LMA). Help develop and execute the strategy for state legislative and regulatory issues, interfacing with Region Executive Officers.


Duties:

Contribute to Federal Government and Industry Affairs efforts

  • Work with LMA Vice President of Government and Industry Affairs in representing LMA’s interests to Congress, regulatory agencies, and other industry groups.
  • Work with LMA volunteer leaders and staff to develop and execute LMA policy.
  • Day-to-day tasks vary but will include issues research, planning meetings, and communicating with LMA members, other agriculture industry representatives, and government officials.

Contribute to State Government and Industry Affairs efforts

  • Assist in monitoring for state issues by helping Region Executive Officers remain in contact with industry and regulatory partners and expand state relationships.
  • Monitor for introduced bills and regulations that would affect livestock marketing businesses.
  • Direct handling of some state issues once they have been identified, including researching the issue, developing strategy, and drafting letters/testimony. Will include working with LMA attorneys and other staff with subject matter expertise.

Represent LMA at meetings, including United States Animal Health Association, National Association of State Departments of Agriculture, and state LMA affiliate meetings.


Contribute to the planning and execution of LMA D.C. Fly In events and other GIA meetings


Manage fundraising and reporting for LMA Political Action Committee.


Develop and execute grassroots advocacy plan engaging LMA members with officials.

  • Expand efforts to connect LMA members with their elected leaders through market visits and action alerts.

Expand LMA member education efforts.

  • Expand hard copy, online, and video materials educating LMA members on important government affairs topics, such a Packers and Stockyards Act and Animal Disease Traceability compliance.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree required. Higher education beneficial.
  • At least 4 years of relevant experience
  • Demonstrated knowledge of/experience in the livestock industry.
  • Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills.
  • Superior organizational and planning skills.
