The Director of the Office of Race and Ethnicity Education (OREE) is a key member of the Student Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (SDEI) Office within the Division of Institutional Diversity, Equity, and Access (IDEA). Reporting to the Associate Dean of the College, Student Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (SDEI), the OREE Director will work alongside the members of the SDEI Office, which include the Center for Gender Resources and Sexuality Equity (GRASE), The John P. Chesick Scholars Program for First-Generation/Low-Income Students, The Marilou Allen Office of Service and Community Collaboration, The Office of International Student Support, and The Office of Religious and Spiritual Life/Quaker Affairs. The Director of OREE will work in close collaboration with a broad range of individuals, offices, and constituencies; cultivate a strong understanding of the complexities of navigating institutions of higher education; and foster a culture of full engagement and ongoing development throughout the community. They will design and lead co-curricular opportunities focused on fostering a sense of belonging and pride among Haverford’s students who are black, indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC). Some of these campus-wide initiatives and workshops include facilitating conversations about race, ethnicity, and other intersectional aspects of identity, as a means to interrogate structures, policies, processes, and practices of power and oppression, in addition to affirming and amplifying the lived experiences and stories of BIPOC communities who have been historically and systematically marginalized, underrepresented, misrepresented, and often erased.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Plan and develop racial, ethnic, and intersectional programs and other educational and engaging events for campus community members that focus on race and ethnicity
  • Serve as a resource and liaison to the campus communities, community partners, families, and alumni regarding support for race and ethnicity-related initiatives, as well as DEI issues
  • Work closely with students and employees of the College to create and facilitate training modules
  • Collaborate with employees of the College across the divisions, as well as alumni and other stakeholders, in support of the OREE mission
  • Lead the application process in collaboration with Residential Life and ensure the success of the cultural centers, which include the Black Cultural Center/Ira Reid House, Latinx Cultural Center, and PANA House. Support the residents of these houses throughout the academic year with ongoing programming
  • Hire, supervise, mentor, and meet regularly with the OREE Interns who will be liaisons between OREE and the affinity groups; support their programming initiatives and contribute to their leadership and professional development
  • Update and maintain the Multicultural Center (MCC) as a culturally representative, welcoming, clean, and safe space for students
  • Manage the operating budget and expenditures related to OREE

Engage and Support Haverford College’s Students, especially students from historically marginalized, underserved, and excluded groups, such as BIPOC students, as well as race/ethnicity-based affinity groups, student organizations, and residents of the cultural centers

  • Establish positive relationships and foster inclusive communities
  • Advise and mentor students and affinity group leaders
  • Contribute to their leadership development and well-being
  • Lead advocacy initiatives, particularly issues relating to culture, race, and ethnicity
  • Connect students to support structures and resources within the College and the surrounding communities

Design, Lead, and Assess Co-Curricular Programming

  • Design, implement, lead, and assess co-curricular programs, workshops, training, and initiatives 1) to encourage engagement and conversations among members of various communities at the College that focus on social justice, racial justice, diversity, access, and inclusion, in addition to issues relating to race, ethnicity, and other intersectional identities; 2) as a means for all campus community members to learn from and address discriminatory, prejudicial, racist, and anti-black sentiments and systemic racism; and 3) to contribute to students’ ability to thrive academically, socially, and personally
  • Design and lead an array of co-curricular programs, workshops, and campus-wide training for faculty, staff, students, and community members that focuses on issues related to race, ethnicity, intersectionality, culture, and BIPOC students by 1) expanding our knowledge, understanding, and support of the critical issues they face at Haverford and beyond; 2) providing trauma-informed and healing-centered framework; and 3) cultivating a sense of belonging, honoring and celebrating them, amplifying their voices, and commemorating their contributions at the College and beyond
  • Collaborate with the Office of Student Engagement and Leadership to develop educational workshops, training, and events for the College’s First-Year orientation and residential education programs
  • Serve as a member on committees, advisory groups, and task forces that aligns with the mission of the OREE and underpins its work, including advocacy and education
  • Lead the development of robust and meaningful cultural heritage month programming in partnership with OREE interns, affinity groups, and divisional colleagues

Advance the work of the SDEI Team

  • Develop and support OREE and SDEI team sponsored programs and workshops, and work closely with students and employees of the College on diversity-related initiatives at Haverford College
  • Contribute to the creation and fulfillment of the SDEI Team’s goals and vision as communicated by the Associate Dean of SDEI
  • Chair the Honoring Our Roots Committee and devise a comprehensive plan to commemorate the heritage months by celebrating the cultures, histories, and identities of Haverford’s diverse communities
  • Engage in team meetings, workshops, strategic planning, and other facets of the SDEI team’s work
  • Collaborate with colleagues in the creation, implementation, and evaluation of intersectional campus-wide and DEI-focused programming and resources
  • Support the work of THRIVE and its initiatives
  • Share your best practices, resources, and supportive networks
  • Other tasks as assigned by your supervisor

Line of Report: The Director of OREE reports to the Associate Dean of the College, Student Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.

Work Location: This position will be eligible for a hybrid work schedule, pursuant to the College’s Work Location Policy. There is a minimum of 4 days per week on campus.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Three years of experience of progressively increasing responsibilities in higher education, community organizing, or related field

  • Experience working with a wide range of individuals and institutions
  • An astute understanding of how to create effective partnerships that draw upon the experiences and knowledge of diverse communities
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Experience managing budgets
  • Excellent time management and prioritization skills and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and effectively handle sensitive and personal information with respect and discretion
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Suite and Google Suite applications

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree
  • Experience in higher education and understanding of overarching institutional frameworks and histories in supporting the work of students, faculty, staff, and administration
  • Experience with event management
