Position Summary:
The Director of Development will be responsible for providing strategic leadership for all advancement, planning, fund development, marketing, and community engagement activities of the organization. The Development Director will work closely with the Goodwill of Central Iowa Foundation Board of Directors and Development Committee to establish fundraising activities through the Foundation Board. This position will be responsible for broadening the base of support for Goodwill of Central Iowa’s operations and special programs.

Job Duties:
Development Strategy

  • Develop executable fundraising strategies that are attainable, sustainable, and scalable
  • Create a realistic budget and manage expenses in compliance with the budget parameters
  • Conduct annual review of all strategies to ensure measures and benchmarks are being attained and that the strategies remain effective. Make adjustments on a timely basis
  • Create and maintain a donor database that allows functionality, reporting, and measureable outcomes
  • Coordinate with the Director of Mission Services to actively seek funding opportunities via grants, foundations, corporations, etc.
  • Secure revenue through grant submissions

Fundraising Activity

  • Execute fundraising activities as outlined in the agreed upon strategic plan which may include direct mail solicitations, individual giving, annual giving, major donor giving, events, and capital campaigns
  • Create proposals to generate revenue from corporate support, grants, foundations, major donors, etc.
  • Establish, execute, and maintain a planned giving program
  • Establish, execute, manage, and scale a major gifts program including identification, cultivation, and solicitation of major donors. Meet prospective donors and supporters on a continual basis to establish sustainable working relationships and build donor confidence
  • Actively seek opportunities in the community to present our story and raise community awareness

Development Resource Management

  • Attend Foundation Board meetings, as requested
  • Lead the Board Development Committee
  • Management responsibilities of the Development employees, hire, fire, performance assessments, coaching, development, onboarding new employees, etc.
  • Keep the CEO and Foundation Board apprised of fundraising outcomes on a quarterly basis or as requested
  • Serve on the Leadership Team
  • Work closely with all GCI staff to implement Goodwill of Central Iowa’s development programs and fundraising activities
  • Ensure a revenue stream that supports 2-3 times the expenses related to fundraising activities

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree, in business, marketing, public administration, public relations or related field or equivalent work experience that demonstrates a success history in revenue development and fundraising activities.
  • Professional fundraising credentials preferred, including the Certified Fund-Raising Executive (CFRE) credential.
  • Preferred 5-7 years of professional experience in the not-for-profit sector in the areas of major gifts (including corporate and foundation relations), planned giving and revenue development.

Required Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to build effective and profitable relationships with donors and potential donors.
  • Knowledge and experience with fundraising techniques including direct mail solicitation, grant writing, donor research, special events management, major donor cultivation and solicitation and planning giving tools.
  • Above average writing skills to create proposals, direct mail solicitations, general correspondence, and donor acknowledgements.
  • Above average public speaking skills and the ability to communicate confidently and credibly with individuals and groups.
  • Excellent time management and organization skills
  • Ability to multi-task – simultaneously organizing ongoing campaigns, projects, and appeals.
  • Self-starter who is goal oriented and outcomes driven, including ability to set and meet challenging and realistic fund development goals.
  • Sound decision making, strategic and critical thinking, problem solving, leadership and motivation skills.
  • Proficient in the use of Client Management software and database systems plus Microsoft Office Suite products.
  • Must have a valid Iowa driver’s license and be able to maintain a driving record that is acceptable to GCI’s insurance carriers.
  • Must be able to successfully pass a criminal background check.
  • Position will need to travel within Central Iowa 25-40% of the time.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to sit for long periods of time
  • Ability to perform computer and/or phone work for long periods of time
  • Ability to travel by vehicle regularly in the Des Moines metro area
