This position is a non-technical position at PST, a wholly owned subsidiary of Union Pacific Railroad. PST has provided innovative software-based business solutions helping companies in the transportation, construction, mining, infrastructure, and energy industries better lead people and assets. Our crew management and timekeeping solutions have been used to run the day-to-day operations of over 100,000 employees, that lead, maintain, and support rail operations across more than 120,000 miles of rail. Those solutions provide highly configurable crew dispatching and time-keeping functions, automate contract rules, manage FRA compliance, and increase transparency within the rail system. The successful candidate will support various application development and software implementation projects associated with CrewPro, PST’s railroad crew management system, and a growing portfolio of associated applications. PST customers span the rail industry including Class I and short-line railroads. PST is proud to support a hybrid work environment coupling an in-office experience with opportunities for remote work as projects allow up to 50%. This position will be filled in Colorado or Nebraska.

The final salary of the selected candidate for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, experience, education, specialty and training.

This Director position is part of the CrewPro product development. The candidate will lead multiple software development sub-teams in the Crew Management domain, comprised of both PST employees and contractors in Louisville, Omaha, and in India. The primary focus for the position will be the responsibility and management of development activities – including status tracking and reporting, production implementation, testing coordination, and ongoing support. Ideal candidates will be self-motivated and organized, have excellent decision-making and problem-solving skills and have experience leading top-performing development teams. Since CrewPro encompasses many feature groups, they must be able to manage multiple overlapping projects and have strong follow-up skills. They must be able to build and maintain strong working relationships, as they will work closely within their team as well as with other PST teams and external customers. They will have strong written and verbal communication skills, including experience with technical writing and translating complex concepts into client-friendly documents /presentations. Due to training and project requirements, it is anticipated the successful candidate will remain in the current assignment/area for up to 24 months before considering other internal opportunities.

Accountabilities

  • SDLC Management - Primary focus of the position will be the responsibility of all stages of the software development life cycle: strategic planning and sizing of work, detailed requirements definition, management of development activities, production implementation, testing coordination, and ongoing support
  • HR Management – Mentor, coach and lead teams regarding performance expectations, project management, and quality system processes. Requires strong interpersonal and leadership skills and the ability to resolve conflict in a win/win manner
  • Project Management/Technical Direction - Effectively lead team activities and deliver a quality product on time. Provides technical direction to the development staff, helps establish technical guidelines and ensures the team is adhering to established standards
  • System Support - Ensures sound operation of mission-critical applications by identifying and quickly resolving any issues that arise
  • Relationship Management - Establish and maintain relationships with customers, PST infrastructure groups, and other development and maintenance groups to encourage partnerships and maximize the quality of the CrewPro product
  • Business Knowledge - Requires demonstrated subject-matter expertise of PST core products, allowing the incumbent to transfer this knowledge to other members of the organization allowing them to be more effective and to develop their skills
  • Problem-Solving - Must be able to take current practices and procedures and improve upon them with innovative ideas. Must be able to understand and integrate solutions in a multi-system environment, providing a seamless look to the customer

Qualifications

Required
  • A Bachelor's degree or commensurate experience in this field
  • Proven written and verbal communication skills including relationship-building and influencing
  • 5+ years of work experience in project management
  • 3+ years of work experience in a management/professional-level position
Preferred
  • A post-graduate degree (Master's Degree, Juris Doctor, etc.) or higher
  • Experience working with contracted development teams both on or offshore
  • Agile development experience and Lean software development experience

Physical Requirements

  • While performing the responsibilities of the job, the employee will spend extended hours in front of a computer screen
