Job Summary
We are currently seeking skilled and team-oriented applicants for the following position: Director – Campus Recreation ( DRP )

The Director of Recreation Programs (DRP) provides leadership and direction for all recreation programs offered at EWU, including Intramural Sports, Club Sports Federation, and EPIC Adventures. As a leader within Student Affairs, the DRP leverages recreation programs and services to improve the overall wellness among the campus community. The DRP has significant responsibilities to work collaboratively with stakeholders who impact the delivery of recreation programs, including , Facilities Staff in the EWU Recreation Center (URC)/Sports and Recreation Center (SRC) The DRP works closely with campus partners, such as ASEWU, Housing and Residential Life, Academic Affairs, and Orientation and Family Programs to increase program participation.
The DRP plays a leading role in defining recreation programming goals and objectives, focused on improving student engagement, retention, and success. The DRP manages the development, execution, and evaluation of programs, manages annual program budgets, and designs/implements comprehensive risk management plans. The DRP drives internal and external communication and brand-management, and guides program staff with equipment purchases and life-cycle management. The DRP performs supervision, evaluation, and offers timely feedback to program staff.
The DRP reports to the Associate Vice President for Campus Life.

  • Coordinator for EPIC Adventures(EWU’s Outdoor Program)
  • Coordinator of Intramurals Sports
  • Coordinator of Club Sports Federation
  • Student staff within Recreation Programs Customer Service Desk and Rental Shop

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Recreation/Sports Administration, Student Affairs, or related field.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of direct professional experience in recreational programming.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of risk management as it relates to recreation programs.
  • Strong operational management skills (including budgeting and financial management).
  • High level of cultural humility and experience working effectively with marginalized populations.
  • Excellent communication skills, written and verbal.
  • Strong organizational and event planning skills.
  • Possess current 1st Aid/CPR certification or the ability to acquire these within 60 days of beginning the position.
  • Demonstrated interest, ability and/or experience promoting cultural competency, universal accessibility, and/or diversity.

Preferred Qualifications
Preferred:
  • Master’s degree in Recreation/Sports Administration, Student Affairs, or related field.
  • Five (5) years of direct professional experience in recreational programming.
  • 3 years of experience with staff supervision, including professionals and students.
  • Experience managing an outdoor recreation rental operation.
  • Certifications in rock climbing, white water rafting and wilderness first aid.
  • Bilingual (Spanish)

Operations, Resource Management, & Planning:
  • Lead and develop strategic and operational business plans for all three Recreation Programs.
  • Oversee the EPIC Rental shop operations and Customer Service Desk of the Recreation Programs Suite.
  • Serve as the liaison between Event Planning, URC Staff, and SRC staff.
  • Assist in departmental planning for scheduling, budgeting, hiring and training of staff and facility coordination for all recreation programs.
  • Develop departmental goals and implement strategies to attain those goals.
  • Develop comprehensive campus recreation policies and a procedures handbook that will encompass all aspects of the various programs.
  • Develop a comprehensive risk management plan for EWU Recreation Programs, in collaboration with EWU’s risk management team, AVP for Campus Life, university policies and other necessary parties.
  • Conduct regular assessment of the recreation programs with a strong emphasis on its impact on building community, student recruitment and retention and student success outside the classroom.
  • Oversee the marketing of the EWU Recreation Programs, including participation in University informational and recruitment events, student orientations, EWU Open House, New Faculty Services Fair, etc.
  • Oversee diversity initiatives to promote participation by all student constituencies, and review marketing and outreach efforts to ensure efforts are inclusive.
  • Serve as a member and/or participate on the ASEWU Recreation Center governing board and the EWU Risk Management Committee.
