Legal Director

Full-Time, Fall River, MA

The Immigration Department at Catholic Social Services provides free and low-cost legal services to low-income immigrants in Southeastern Massachusetts. It represents immigrants and their families applying for green cards, defense from deportation, asylum protection, citizenship and other lawful statuses. The immigration department also conducts outreach including legal workshops, educational presentations, and trainings for the immigrant community and the health and human service providers who serve immigrants.

The Legal Director leads, manages, and supports legal personnel who provide direct client representation, and serves as lead counsel for the Catholic Social Services of Fall River, Inc.’s (CSS) immigration department. The Legal Director also develops, maintains, and disseminates legal information (e.g., cases, statutes, and regulations) to provide support to legal team and ensure staff knowledge remains up-to-date.

The Legal Director is responsible for management and administration of the immigration department; this includes managing the department budget, preparing and submitting grant reports to funders, conducting community outreach and networking as well as identifying and pursuing funding opportunities for the department that align with CSS’ mission. The Legal Director develops and monitors all administrative policies and procedures for the program.

Qualifications include:

  • Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited law school and member in good standing of state bar Massachusetts preferred
  • Excellent legal skills with at least 5 years of substantive experience in immigration law preferred
  • Excellent professional judgment
  • Excellent critical thinking and evaluation skills
  • Excellent oral and written communication competency with attention to detail
  • Exceptional time management and organizational skills
  • Track record of assuming leadership roles and responsibilities
  • Microsoft Suite proficiency preferred
  • Written and verbal fluency in a foreign language (Spanish, Portuguese, French or Haitian Creole) is strongly preferred
  • Ability to easily integrate new technology into work environment
