LOCOMOTIVE MECHANIC POSITION

Job Functions:

  • Inspect, troubleshoot, repair, rebuild, install, and maintain various mechanical components for locomotives (such as fuel and water pumps, control valves, governors, distributors, and windshield wiper motors using mechanics hand tools)
  • Safely set up, operate, adjust and qualify mechanical devices in operation including grinders, control instruments, and other metalworking tools to make and repair parts.
  • Dismantle devices to gain access to and remove defective parts, using hoists, cranes, hand tools, and power tools.
  • Torque crab nuts, head nuts, basket bolts, exhaust stacks, and rocker arm nuts.
  • Time all injectors and valves, sets racks, and verifies pointers.
  • Check turbo, idler backlash, and AR-10 bearings.
  • Dress locomotive cabs, such as removing and re-installing subflooring, seats, and liners.
  • Operate overhead cranes, truck cranes, forklifts, and cutting tools as needed in a safe manner.
  • Diagnose, repair, and maintain equipment as required.
  • Handle, store, and dispose of waste materials in compliance with statutory regulations.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Ability to lift to 82 lbs. with or without assistance.
  • Regular standing, walking, grasping, stooping, bending, kneeling, and squatting for extended periods of time.
  • Regular ascending/descending stairs, ladders. Enter/exit locomotives, Work on ladders and scaffoldings with use of hand tools. Carry or hold parts.
  • Ability to perform work on uneven surfaces, elevated surfaces, and from various heights, including making inspections and repairs on top of locomotives.
  • Ability to perform work in conditions that include loud noises, various temperatures (hot and cold environments), fumes, dust, and on and around heavy moving machinery.
  • Ability to crawl and perform work in tight spaces with use of hand tools and carrying or holding parts.
  • Wear personal protective equipment such as hard hat, hearing protection, safety glasses and steel toe boots.
  • Ability to operate tools and equipment such as hand tools, measuring instruments, overhead crane, and forklift.
  • Ability to use arms and hands to perform activities involving carrying, holding, grasping, twisting/turning, and pushing/pulling and reaching above shoulder level.

Requirements:

  • Prefer High School Education or GED
  • Mechanical aptitude
  • Read precision instruments and gauges
  • Capable use of hand and power tools, including pneumatic tools
  • Work around and operate overhead cranes and mobile equipment
  • Work from heights over 6”
  • Work on varied surfaces (concrete floors, gravel, rail car floors)
  • Constant standing, walking
  • Medically qualified for respirator use
  • Frequent bending, crouching, stooping, kneeling, squatting, overhead reaching, climbing ladders
  • Frequent work below waist level and above shoulder level
  • Confined space work
  • High physical demand working environment: o Push/pull up to 200 lbs. o Carrying up to 100 lbs.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Diesel mechanical knowledge preferred.
  • Thorough knowledge of (or ability to quickly learn) O.E.M. maintenance instructions and procedures and Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) rules.
  • Able to read and understand safety and environmental rules, technical manuals, work reports, specifications, schematics, and drawings.
  • Good problem-solving skills and attention to detail and ability to manage deadlines.
  • Ability to work overtime to support production demands.
