Design Engineer Job at Altra Industrial Motion Corp.
Under the direction of the Engineering Manager. The Design Engineer is responsible the generation of quality engineering drawings, using the company approved engineering drafting standards and procedures. Suggests product improvements, maintains knowledge of the products and their proper application. Keeps abreast of any technological changes which affect the company’s product. Collaborate with other departments. Work on small projects or portions of larger projects. Receive directions from Manager or Engineering lead on projects.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Duties include but are not limited to:
- Communicate and work with others in Design Engineering and other departments.
- Prepare accurate drawings of a new design.
- Acquire knowledge of the product and apply to specific applications.
- Make calculations on tolerance stack-up of multi-component systems, strengths of materials, and related dimensional changes to the design.
- Prepares layouts and detail drawings of new or modified parts.
- Understand geometric dimensioning and tolerancing.
- Select “hardware” items such as bearings, screws, snap rings and more.
- Prepares bills of material for these product and engineering changes. Releases engineering change notices.
- Performs assigned tasks related to engineering and drafting.
- Uses 3D solids CAD software with finite element analysis tools for design & analysis of products.
- Apply, recommend, and follow lean initiatives/practices.
- Adheres to all safety rules and report questionable conditions to the department manager.
Job Requirements:
Critical Competencies
- Willingness to work "hands-on" to build/create new things and to troubleshoot problems is a must.
- The ability to read and interpret documents such as manufacturing drawings, general business periodicals, professional journals, safety rules, operation and maintenance instructions, technical and procedure manuals, and government regulations.
- Ability to effectively communicate and present information and respond to questions from groups of employees, managers, customers, clients, and the public.
- Ability to multi-task and work in a fast-paced environment.
Education and Experience Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, required.
- 3 year of experience in mechanical engineering, required.
- 1 year of Manufacturing experience, required.

The employee must be able to fly or drive out of town to attend meetings with members of other Altra facilities or customers and suppliers or to attend training. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision and peripheral vision.
