Position Purpose:

To bridge the Marketing & Publicity and Design teams by bringing a designer’s eye to the creation of title-specific marketing materials and administrative support to the daily operations of the Art Department, ensuring our business’s public reputation as a trustworthy creative partner.

This is a new role within the company, so we expect the final duties & responsibilities to be tailored to the strengths of the chosen candidate. The position will involve some design and creative research, an opportunity to learn about both book making and promotion and will require a strict attention to detail and unfailing communication skills.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Design & produce materials for the Marketing & Publicity team, including:
    • Title-specific digital and social media ads
    • Cover reveals for high-priority titles
    • Design support on more complex social media projects
    • Supplemental materials for specific titles, i.e., designed book club questions, event kits, etc.
    • Digital holiday card
  • Administrative & studio support for the Design team:
    • Participate in weekly design critiques & scheduling meetings
    • Manage contracts workflow: Using existing templates, draft contracts for design, illustration, and other creative services. Ensure that contracts are drafted, signed, and returned in a timely fashion to keep book schedules on track; maintain contract database and input expenses into appropriate budget tracking forms.
    • Manage font licensing requests: Using existing procedures, communicate with HBG’s font broker to assist in the acquisition of new font purchases
    • Liaise with independent contractors: collect all necessary signatures and tax forms; guide the correct preparation of invoices per HBG’s corporate regulations; field and follow-up on queries regarding payments.
    • Assist designers on book projects: art, typography, illustrator, and/or designer research; prepare materials for freelance designers; offer typesetting and layout support.
    • Work closely with Creative Director on overhead Art Department functions: maintain studio supply inventory; keep department’s digital resources updated & organized
    • Other tasks as necessary & available


Knowledge and Skill Requirements:

  • 2+ years of professional work experience in a design role is preferred, though not required
  • Must have an online portfolio link with sample work in addition to a resume and cover letter. Your cover letter should detail why you’re interested in the role and supporting the Timber Press imprint.
  • Software: High proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite applications, particularly InDesign & Acrobat; strong knowledge of Microsoft Office
  • A willingness to take direction as well as to work independently, demonstrated by strong organizational, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and spoken
  • An ability to manage multiple projects with shifting deadlines and priorities
  • A love of plants, gardening, and natural sciences is not required, but it sure doesn’t hurt

Physical Demands:

  • Must have close visual acuity to perform activities such as viewing and creating designs using a computer terminal
  • Must be able to sit or stand in one location for extended periods of time

The compensation range for this position is $42,750 - $44,750 per year. Salary can vary based on a number of factors including skills, experience, and location — talk with your recruiter to learn more. There may be times that you will be required (or requested) to work overtime due to the nature of your role or exceptional workload issues or special projects.
