Our Data Management Office is currently looking for a Data Steward (MA4) to serve as a domain expert focused on data driven results as a part of the Data Stewardship team.

The Director’s Office of The Department of Licensing is a team whose work ultimately makes a positive impact on public safety. Working in a mostly self-managed role, you will serve as the face of state government, as we serve nearly every Washingtonian, providing almost 6 million driver licenses and identification cards, registering over 7 million vehicles and vessels, and licensing over a quarter million professionals and businesses. We also partner with law enforcement, and many agencies and stakeholders who impact public safety.

Duties

As a Data Steward (MA4) you will play a key role in researching, analyzing, coordinating data governance decisions, and helping create best practices and standards. Your ability to effectively communicate and influence people around you based on your data driven decisions will be key in this position. Working as a team, you will consider complex agency-wide management problems and support the entire team and their domains by learning a diverse range of areas. This role will also allow you to be a key advocate for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) as they relate to data management and accessibility. Through a DEI lens, you will develop DOL’s understanding and operational awareness of DEI opportunities related to your domain or expertise.

Some of what you will be doing:


  • Analyze the organization of data within your business process or unit including preparing data inventories, conducting workshops, and creating materials for agency staff.
  • Utilize agency experts to ensure proper categorization, storage, and classification of data to analyze and update existing repositories with kinds/metadata changes and ensure Data Governance Committee standards are being met.
  • Work within the team to analyze and adjust agency metadata and retention schedules to match business needs.
  • Research, analyze, and coordinate data governance decisions, standards, and best practices with agency business processes and the supporting applications and present recommendation to agency management.
  • Coach agency personnel to complete data requests while using analysis of current data management practices to provide advice and promote efficient practices that align with agency goals and healthy data lifecycles.
  • Coordinate and advise IS/Architecture staff conducting technical reviews for projects affecting data in your domain.
  • Analyze and present information related to the effectiveness of agency policies to agency officers and committees.

Qualifications

What you will bring to the role:

  • Eight (8) years of combined and relevant education and experience in a privacy or analytical role that included review of laws, policies, and processes to develop recommendations and implement changes that impact various business functions or data management needs.
Experience may be gained concurrently.
Education to Experience Equivalency (for a related field).
Associate’s degree = 2 years | Bachelor’s degree = 4 years | Master's degree = 5 years

What will help set you apart:
  • Demonstrate strong analytical skills working with structured datasets in a variety of formats and tools commonly used in DOL, including two or more of the following: Excel pivot tables, SQL services, Salesforce Einstein, Tableau.
  • Master’s or higher degree in a related field (law, library science, information management, computer science, business, public administration).
  • Four (4) years’ experience working in a team setting in DOL or a related agency of the State of Washington.
  • Three (3) years’ combined education and work experience in a library or information management discipline.
  • Significant professional understanding of Financial Transactions and/or Location or Geospacial data domains prevalent in DOL. Also, any knowledge in other data domain areas such as:
    • Identity and Identification
    • Customer relationship
    • Vehicle licensing
    • Driver licensing
    • Professional licensing
Additional Requirements of Employment:
  • Per Governor Inslee’s Directive 22-13.1, state employees must be fully vaccinated effective November 4, 2022.
