For at least 4,000 years, people have been growing food in this region, and the New Mexico Farm & Ranch Heritage Museum in Las Cruces tells this amazing story through interactive exhibits, demonstrations, oral histories, objects, and educational programs. The campus features several barns, animals, a greenhouse, play areas for children, an amphitheater, the Heritage Garden and much more. Permanent and changing exhibits, as well as a theater, library, gift shop, snack bar, and meeting rooms are located in the 100,000-square-feet, ranch-style Bruce King Building.

The combination of the beautiful, spacious main building and the 47-acre property with barns, trees, gardens, and animals create a physical working environment that is outstanding. The Museum¿s
staff members come from a variety of backgrounds and combine their skills to make an efficient, positive team.

The Curator position at the New Mexico Farm & Ranch Heritage Museum researches, develops, and interprets exhibitions, collections, and educational programs. This position serves as a contributing member of the Research & Exhibits Team in developing content for exhibits, serving on the Collections Committee in the acquisition, storage, and exhibition of collections and archives, and supporting the Education & Events department in developing interpretation.

How does it get done?

With a focus on visitor experience, the Curator will plan, develop, complete, interpret, and promote exhibitions. Working with the Research & Exhibits department and outside stakeholders, the Curator will research and help create exhibitions as related to the mission of the Museum. The Curator will interpret artifacts and archives for exhibits and select acquisitions to the collection as it relates to the museum collection development plan. Working with the Education Department, the Curator will review, and revise the Museum¿s interpretive plan to develop tours and training docents.

The residents of New Mexico, museum visitors, Museum staff, and the Department of Cultural Affairs staff.

Ideal Candidate

At least three years¿ experience as a curator with a record of exhibitions, collections management, and publications. Established track record of project development and implementation.

Minimum Qualification

Bachelor's degree in Museum Studies, Museology, Art, Art History, Art Administration, Anthropology, American Studies, Archaeology, Curatorial Studies, History, Humanities, Interdisciplinary Studies, Liberal Arts, Public History, or Paleontology and four (4) years of experience in exhibit development, collections management, curation, creative writing, conducting research in specialty area of a museum, and working with historical concepts. Employment Requirements

Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification as a condition of continued employment. Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver's License.

Working Conditions

State of New Mexico employees may be impacted by the Public Health Order dated December 19, 2022, which requires facilities licensed or certified by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services ("CMS"), including all hospital types, long-term care facilities, nursing homes, hospice facilities and rehabilitation facilities, as well as assisted living facilities and adult day care settings, to adhere to all COVID-related requirements prescribed by CMS, including, but not limited to masking and staff vaccination.

Office setting, exposure to Visual/Video Display terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer, headphone, microphone and phone usage with extended periods of sitting. Periods of standing in various settings conducting programs. Sometime will be spent off-site in classrooms or community spaces in order to deliver Museum programs. Must be able to lift 25 lbs.
