GENERAL PURPOSE

This position is responsible for the preparation and presentation of all educational aspects including but not limited to programming, events, interpretation, and conservation messaging. This position is integral in the implementation and coordination of teen programs.

REQUIRED EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in an education, science, or related field required, plus at least six (6) months of experience in informal education preferred. Must be proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Suite. Must have great problem solving, analytical, organizational, interpersonal; and written and verbal communication skills. Must be able to provide effectively for persons with special needs; must be comfortable handling ambassador animals.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

1. Oversee the development, implementation, and supervision of the Summer Teen, Interpretive Volunteer, and Education Intern programs.
2. Assist with the training, coordinating, and scheduling of the Junior Zookeeper program.
3. Prepare, present, and evaluate educational programs both on and off-site, during and outside of regular zoo hours of operation.
4. Assist with the development of educational programs, ensuring the incorporation of relevant and appropriate conservation messaging.
5. Continually work to enhance and develop opportunities to connect with diverse audiences.
6. Prepare and present guest engagement programs to zoo visitors.
7. Take program reservations and prepare confirmations.
8. Handle appropriate animals for programs.
9. Participate in the care, training, and enrichment of select ambassador animals, ensuring their welfare.
10. Report any observed changes in health and/or behavior of program animals in a timely manner.
11. Prepare oral and written reports as requested by supervisor.
12. Represent the zoo at promotional and educational events offered by other organizations.
13. Interact with the public offering education, information, assistance, or control when necessary.
14. Assist with the facilitation and evaluation of zoo rentals.
15. Assist with the development and facilitation of special events both during and outside of regular zoo hours of operation.
16. Assist with keeping the zoo’s website and social media sites current.
17. Maintain the highest level of safety in the work area through implementation of safety protocols and
18. Report repairs and maintenance needs of program areas, equipment, and grounds in a timely manner.
19. Provide a high quality of customer service in a professional manner to the internal customer that will facilitate team building and exceptional customer service to the external customer.
20. Follow the Wheaton Park District and Cosley Zoo policies, procedures, and guidelines.
21. Proactively support the V.A.L.U.E.S. (integrity, fun, commitment, adaptability and growth, kindness, and service) on a daily basis.

REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, ETC

Must have and maintain: a valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record, achieve and maintain animal handling certification for all animals used in programs, and current Mandatory Reporter certificate.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Must be able to: occasionally remain in a stationary position while using a computer involving repetitive hand/finger movements, frequently move around the facility and on uneven ground; frequently ascend/descend stairs, position one’s self to handle animals; and frequently move items weighing up to 25 lbs. and rarely over 25 lbs.

ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS

Must be able to: work in an office environment and will frequently be exposed to all weather conditions, fumes, gases, odors, dust, mold, pesticides, chemicals, walk on wet surfaces, and mud. This position will frequently be exposed to animal hair/dander/feces and biting and stinging insects and bugs.

SALARY

$16.00 per hour

HOURS

Sunday-Wednesday 8:30am-4pm with occasional evening hours.
