The Colorado Department of Corrections is committed to the safety of our employees. The CDOC has been working with state and local partners to proactively prevent the spread of COVID-19 within the state prison system.

This position may be eligible for a $3250 hiring incentive. Individuals selected for positions in Buena Vista, Canon City, Limon and Sterling will receive an additional $2500 for a total of $5750.

New Hire Incentive guidelines are as follows:

1. New hire must successfully complete the probationary period, staying one year

2. If new hire leaves the department prior to one year, incentive shall be paid back/collected at the time of final payout

3. Not applicable to employee promotions

4. Paid out at three months and six months of service

Note: CDOC staff members who left the department after 9/21/2022, will not be eligible for the new hire incentive if they choose to return.


This position is located in Sterling, CO but will require weekly travel to other correctional facilities.

Who May Apply: The primary duties of this position are located within 30 miles of the state border; therefore, this position is exempt from the residency requirements. Applications will be considered from residents and non-residents of Colorado.

Description of Job

Colorado Correctional Industries (CCi) is responsible for programs, manufacturing goods and providing services to thousands of government and/or non-profit customers in Colorado. Business is operated in the manufacturing and service related fields.
This position is responsible for daily oversight, supervision, and management of the production and service units for Colorado Correctional Industries (CCi) in the Leather Shop, Garment Factory and Canine Program. This position provides inmate employment and training, evaluates equipment and resource needs, and supervises staff in these programs with the goal to employ and train as many inmates within the work units as practicable and meaningful while maintaining security in the workplace.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Serves as the Site Supervisor over the Leather Shop, Canine Program, and Garment Factory;
  • Provides oversight and supervision of staff and inmates which include scheduling to maximize production, meeting customer, industry and facility needs; performance plans, evaluations, reviews, and expectations; recommendation of corrective/disciplinary actions and resolve/document formal and informal grievances;
  • Establishes and communicates production, quality, and security standards to staff and inmates;
  • Develops and defends operating budgets to include revenue projections and estimation of expenses;
  • Analyzes accounting, production costs/revenues, and staffing;
  • Coordinates the production and distribution of products and services to ensure customer satisfaction and market relevance;
  • Develops, tracks, and records pertinent performance measures for all production areas;
  • Increases employment opportunities of inmates, ensuring profitability of CCi;
  • Requires weekly travel to other correctional facilities;
  • Performs other job related duties as assigned or required.

Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Six (6) years of manufacturing experience in a commercial or industrial operations, providing oversight of production lines. This experience must include:
    • One (1) year supervision experience over fully trained employees. Supervision is exercising span and control over subordinate staff to include coaching, mentoring, daily monitoring, performance management (planning, reviewing and evaluating), resolving complaints/grievances at the informal level, responsibility for scheduling and leave approval, and providing input that could affect pay, status, or tenure.
Substitutions:
Education from an accredited college or university in Manufacturing, Manufacturing Management, Trades Management, Business Administration, Business Management, Marketing, Public Administration, Accounting or a closely related field will substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis. There is no substitution for the one (1) year supervision experience over fully trained employees. If you are using education as a substitution, you must attach transcripts showing the degree and date awarded.

A bachelors degree that is not in a related field of study, may substitute up to 60 semester hours of core coursework on a year for year basis.

  • Supervision is defined as making decisions that affected the pay, status and tenure of subordinate staff.

  • Experience as a 2nd level supervisor or managing correctional programs which includes planning, development and implementation of policies and budget necessary to achieve the mission and goals of an organization or program. (2nd level supervision is defined as supervising operations and subordinate supervisors to include performance management and making decisions that impact the pay, status, and tenure of subordinate staff;)
  • Profit/loss experience for an organization or business;
  • Experience working in a correctional environment.

  • Successfully pass all modules of the Colorado Department of Corrections Basic Training, to include English reading comprehension, relevant competency assessments and written/practical exams in Defensive Tactics;
  • Possess the physical ability to successfully complete Defensive Tactics;
    • Lift arms above head and kick as high as own waist;
    • Stabilize another person to accomplish a controlled take down;
    • Use arms, palms of hands, shins, and feet to deliver blows;
    • Withstand impact (slow speed or with a safety bag) on own body from strikes/blows;
    • Swing a baton in a striking technique;
    • Rotate body 90 degrees with feet planted for striking with foot or using a defensive tactic;
    • Get down on one or both knees and up again with multiple repetitions;
  • Will be exposed to Oleoresin Capsicum during Basic Training and will be exposed while on assignment;
  • Must be able to see and hear in order to observe, address and respond to potential breaches in safety and security
  • Seize, hold, control or subdue violent or assaultive persons and defend oneself or others to prevent injury;
  • Demonstrate body agility, strength of all four limbs and the ability to walk and climb stairs consistently;
  • Work in situations involving assaultive behavior, physical control of another person and/or restraint situations;
  • Deal with individuals with a range of moods and behaviors, utilizing tactfulness and a congenial, personable manner;
  • Work with people of the opposite sex, diverse racial ethnic groups, mentally ill and emotionally disturbed inmates;
  • Communicate by talking, listening and/or signaling people to convey or exchange information, assignments;
  • Work in an environment with fluctuating noise and temperature (hot and cold) which may include working outdoors in inclement weather and/or concrete floor/wall work settings;
  • Willing and able to travel;
  • Willing and able to work various shifts, days, afternoons, graveyards (nights) which includes a rotating shift schedule;
  • TB (tuberculosis) screening is required of all new employees upon hire.

Successful completion of a background investigation is required. Should applicant’s background reveal criminal charges, it shall be the responsibility of the applicant to provide the Department of Corrections with written/official disposition of any charges.

The CDOC is committed to a work environment free from illegal drugs and alcohol. Employees (see exception below) may use marijuana in their personal time but are prohibited from working while under the influence of any substance, including marijuana. A drug test will be administered to all new employees; employees must successfully pass. Random drug screening will occur throughout employment.

Exception: Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certified employees are prohibited from the use of marijuana. Health care professionals must check their licensing requirements regarding marijuana use.
