This position reports to the Correctional Food Service Supervisor I and is located in the Food Service Department of a multi-custody female correctional facility. The job responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

Performing first-line supervisory work in large-scale food production and food service operations in a correctional facility.

  • Operating in a dual role of production and food service operations in a correctional facility by providing supervision and custody of offenders in their assigned food preparation and food service work areas.
  • Overseeing offender workers engaged in a variety of activities in food production including cooking, baking, and serving of food to the offender population including monitoring the quality of work performed by the offenders.
  • Training offenders in the art of institutional cooking, baking and serving; maintaining standards of sanitation in all areas of the kitchen and performing storage responsibilities.
  • Communicating verbally and in written form & inputting and comprehending computer data.
  • Securing and maintaining equipment & reading, comprehending and calculating menus.
  • Observing sanitary food handling practices, understanding food nutritional values, & inventory and rotating stock.
  • Completing CPR, Firearms, & Unarmed Self Defense training.

This is a full-time position (40 hours per week) with State Benefits. The selected candidate may be selected to work any shift and will work weekends and holidays to ensure 24/7 staff coverage.

The salary grade for this position is NC05 (Salary Range: $31,200 - $54,101). State employees are encouraged to apply for positions of interest even if the salary grade is the same as, or lower than, their current position. If selected for this position, a new salary will be recalculated taking into consideration the quantity of relevant education and experience, funding availability, and internal equity. Based upon these factors, a pay increase MAY result.

About North Carolina Correctional Institution for Women (NCCIW):
North Carolina Correctional Institution for Women, in Raleigh, is the state's primary correctional facility for women. It houses the largest offender population in the state and serves as the support facility for the state's other female prisons. The campus-style facility sits on 30 acres of a 190-acre tract of state land in southeast Raleigh. NCCIW houses offenders of all custody levels and control statuses, including death row, maximum, close, medium, minimum, safekeepers and youth. It provides the primary medical, mental, and alcohol and chemical dependency treatment for female offenders.

The facility operates a diagnostic center that serves as the point of entry into the prison system for women. Upon arrival, offenders undergo a series of diagnostic evaluations that will determine future prison assignments.

Documented knowledge of large-scale food production and food service activities.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and one year of experience in institutional food preparation and food services, in management of a commercial food service operations, as a Correctional Officer; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Special Qualifications*: Must be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.
