POSITION SUMMARY: Construction Laborer will be under the direct supervision of the Mod/ren Supervisor. Position will require construction, repair, and install wooden building frameworks and structures from indoors to outdoors on many projects, including installing kitchen cabinets, roofing, and building ramps. The Construction Laborer will generally have a smaller tool inventory and may need direction to perform more advanced carpentry and perform other duties as assigned or requested.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Read blueprints, drawings, and sketches to fully grasp requirements.
  • Take measurements and calculate the size and amount of material needed.
  • Cut, shape and smooth lumber and other material (e.g.fiberglass) according to measurements.
  • Build window frames, doors, staircases, and frame buildings by using raw materials or pre-constructed items.
  • Lay out floorings, roofing’s or drywall ensuring they are level and compatible.
  • Carve and assemble furniture, cabinets, shelves, and other items and install them where designed.
  • Inspect places and conduct repairs or maintenance.
  • Build scaffolding and other construction structures.
  • Hands-on experience in working with carpentry materials.
  • Understanding of carpentry techniques and methods of installation and construction.
  • Proficient in using electrical and manual equipment and measurement tools (powered saws, hammers, rulers, etc.)
  • Erect and disassemble scaffolding, shoring, braces, traffic barricades, ramps, and other temporary structures.
  • Grind, scrape, sand, or polish surfaces such as concrete, marble, terrazzo, or wood flooring, using abrasive tools or machines.
  • Install sewer, water, and storm drainpipes, using pipe-laying machinery and laser guidance equipment.
  • Load, unload, and identify building materials, machinery, and tools, and distribute them to the appropriate locations, according to project plans and specifications.
  • Measure, mark and record openings and distances to lay out areas where construction work will be performed.
  • Mix ingredients to create compounds for covering or cleaning surfaces.
  • Help labors/workers when necessary.
  • Read and interpret plans, instructions, and specifications to determine work activities.
  • And other duties as assigned.

Special Requirements

  • Must pass a federal, state, and tribal background check.
  • Pass pre-employment drug testing.
  • Must have a clear motor vehicle record and be insurable under FBHA auto insurance.

Knowledge

  • MHA Nation culture and traditions desirable and a willingness to learn.
  • Knowledge of FBHA Personnel Policies and Procedures.
  • Knowledge of the construction process.
  • Knowledge of proper use of equipment, materials and supplies used in concrete and masonry construction work.
  • Some knowledge of first aid and applicable safety precautions.

Abilities

  • Ability to work independently and complete daily activities according to work schedule.
  • Ability to lift heavy objects and manipulate objects of up to 80 lbs. for 50 feet is required.
  • Ability to climb ladders for heights of up to 60 feet.
  • Require travel up to 25% of the time.
  • Ability to maintain the strictest confidentiality and will be required to sign a confidentiality agreement.
  • Ability to multi-task and detail oriented.
  • Ability to meet attendance schedule with dependability and consistency.
  • Ability to handle job performance evaluations in a professional manner.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Regularly works near moving mechanical parts and in outside conditions that include inclement weather, heat, and humidity, and exposure to dust and concrete.
  • Must be able to lift, push, pull, or carry objects, use abdominal and lower back muscles to provide support over time without fatigue and to effectively jump, sprint or throw an object.
  • Requires good manual dexterity and multi-limb coordination.
  • Noise level is generally loud.
  • Must be able to quickly move arms and legs.
  • Unless otherwise properly approved, the normal schedule of hours is from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon, and from 12:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Deviation from the normal schedule may be required for certain programs.

PHYSICAL CONDITIONS:

  • Job requires to perform tasks on all areas and aspects of construction project.
  • Requires lifting heavy objects and crawling for a distance of 30 feet.
  • Job requires walking and standing for long periods of time and perform strenuous physical labor under adverse field conditions.

HAZARDS:

Normal hazards associated with construction environment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION:

  • High School Diploma/GED, and vocational training in Construction coursework with at least three years’ experience in all phases of construction.
  • Any combination of education and experience that demonstrates the knowledge and ability to perform the work.
  • Preference given to those with Carpentry degrees from a recognized trade school.
  • Willingness and ability to perform manual work following verbal and written instructions.
  • Possess valid ND Driver’s license and meet driver eligibility guidelines for tribal insurance purposes.
  • Must be sensitive to cultural differences, required.
