Job Summary:

This role is responsible for direct leadership of a team of claims professionals in our complex casualty group. Claims handled in this group are bodily injury and uninsured/underinsured motorist claims with severe injuries and/or complex claims handling requirements. This group specializes in rejected tenders nationwide, and in the handling of multiple competing claims and serious injuries with limited policy limits. This leadership role is responsible for care and development of the people in their department, as well as accountable for day-to-day guidance, direction and oversight of complex injury files. An applicant for this role needs extensive experience with the handling of the most severe injuries, ability to defend multi-million dollar bodily injury claims in litigation, and have extensive experience in the management of risk in dangerous and complex venues.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Analyzes results and metrics to identify claims handling trends and patterns, correcting any negative trends in a timely fashion.
  • Responsible for complex claim decisions, identification of hiring, training, and succession planning opportunities, and the development and implementation of short- and long-term strategies and process improvements to achieve claims handling excellence and the protection of our insureds.
  • Accountable for human resources duties, including resource management, hiring, performance management, talent development and compensation planning
  • Manages and resolves escalated customer communications, concerns, conflicts or issues
  • Develops and directs business unit action plans
  • Fosters a collaborative environment that inspires and motivates many employees
  • Ensures understanding of business objectives, results, processes, etc. with their direct reports
  • Ensures the timely and appropriate handling of all aspects of claims in the most complex and risky venues, eliminating risk to the insured and to the company.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

This job does have supervisory duties for a team of 5-10 individuals in our complex casualty unit.

Preferred Qualifications:

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience
  • 7 or more years of related experience
  • Previous leadership experience highly desired

  • High-level written and verbal communication skills; able to present complex claims in a simple manner to all levels of the organization and to internal and external customers.
  • High-level leadership ability with demonstrated ability to develop, motivate and retain quality employees.
  • Possess extensive knowledge of insurance policy, coverage, and regulation
  • Possess extensive knowledge of claim processes, policies, procedures, claim systems, coverage, liability, damage estimating, and/or settlement, and adherence to applicable legal compliance standards
  • Possess insurance industry knowledge
  • Possess heightened problem solving skills and creative thinking for claims resolution and defense
  • Be able to apply ability to leverage learned technical skills in support of team objectives
  • Possess ability to teach/train on negotiation, claims investigation, letter writing, assessment of risk, litigation management and coverage and liability investigation skills

National General prides itself on offering our employees a robust Total Rewards package which includes base salary. The base range offered for the role is: $102,500 - $115,000 and may vary based on internal equity, and job-related skills, knowledge and experience; among other factors. Other financial components may be added as part of the competitive compensation package, in addition to a full range of benefits, dependent on the level and position offered.
