POSITION SUMMARY

Works under the direction of a registered professional nurse to provide basic nursing care to patients.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

1. Provides for patient’s personal hygiene: gives bedpans, urinals, baths, backrubs, shampoos, shaves, and assists with showers.

2. Provides for activities of daily living: assists with meals, and feeds patients; ambulates, turns, and positions patients; provides fresh water and nourishment between meals.

3. Administers enemas, douches, non-sterile dressings, surgical preps, ice packs, heat treatments, sitz and therapeutic baths.

4. Performs I & O; checks vital signs and weight; specimen collection, and post mortem care.

5. Provides for comfort needs of patient.

6. Works effectively as a team member in the delivery of care and assists in the orientation of new employees.

7. Utilizes resources and materials in an efficient and safe manner.

8. Maintains a safe and attractive environment for patients and co-workers; transports patients and equipment as appropriate.

9. Promptly answers patients’ call lights and requests.

10. Reports observations of a patient to the nurse caring for the patient to ensure professional assessment.

11. Instills confidence in the patient by maintaining a neat and attractive appearance and performing duties in a competent and caring manner.

12. Shows dependability by being punctual; maintains consistent attendance.

13. Maintain good working relations among all nursing unit personnel and other hospital employees through appropriate communication.

14. In special area, performs duties as defined on specialized-skill list.

15. With specialized training, and written approval, may perform additional and specialized tasks pertinent to the assigned area.

16. Accepts reassignment as needed to provide necessary care for all patients.

QUALIFICATIONS STANDARDS

1. Current nursing certification in the State of Arizona.

2. Current CPR certification.

3. Previous hospital experience preferred.

4. Ability to demonstrate clinical competence and maintain current knowledge in caring for all age groups of patients.

5. Ability to communicate effectively in English both verbally and in writing.

6. Ability to function under stressful situations.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects.

2. Frequently required to stand, walk, and reach with hands and arms.

3. Occasionally required to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

4. Good hearing is necessary to receive detailed information through oral communication and to make fine discriminations in sound.

5. Visual acuity is needed to assess color changes and to verify accuracy of written materials.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Must understand and accept the possibility of exposure to inside environmental conditions, such as infectious/communicable diseases, noise, blood, and blood-borne diseases, chemicals and/or chemical fumes, odors, gases, dusts, and physical injury/verbal abuse from an out-of-control patient. Frequent exposure to distressed patient, families, or visitors.
