Major Responsibilities:
Process therapeutic and diagnostic orders of the medical staff.
1)Transcribe medical staff orders in an accurate and timely matter.
2)Notify the patient care team and ancillary departments of outstanding orders either verbally or through computer entry as appropriate.
3)Determine and schedule patient procedures/tests in an appropriate sequence.
4)Maintain current lists of attending and consulting physicians on Kardex as well as in the computer.
5)Communicate pertinent and timely information to appropriate departments and staff, activities related to bed utilization.
6)Knowledge of terminology and procedures/tests related to Patient Care Center.
7)Process patient charges for multidiscipline services such as low flow oxygen maintenance, pulse oximetry, blood transfusions, IMs, etc.
Ensure accurate maintenance of the patient’s medical record and all unit records.
1)Verify all documents contained within the medical record for complete and accurate patient demographic information.
2)Collect and identify all misfiled documents.
3)Assemble the medical record in the proper sequence checking that all forms are labeled.
4)Place/establish analysis record on front of chart for chart analysis process.
5)Flag all unsigned physician orders, reports, etc. and alert physician to sign when present on unit.
6)Identify operative and procedure reports still not dictated and note them on the analysis sheet.
7)Determine completeness of the medical record and prepare for final assembly upon patient discharge.
8)Maintain identified unit logs and checklists as requested inclusive of reporting restraint and sitter usage.
9)Copy/fax charts for outpatient programs and transfers to other facilities.
10)Assign patients beds according to patient type and care needs. This may vary according to PCC.
Support the patient care team in the activities related to the delivery of care.
1)Assist in the identification of correct patient diet during distribution of trays.
2)Participate and prepare and replace as needed, accurate patient identification such as wrist bands, over bed signs, etc.
3)Responds to call lights as needed and alerting staff to patient needs.
4)Demonstrates the ability to respond to emergency situations such as Code Red, Code Grey, etc.
5)Promotes patient safety by reporting of issues through established channels and participating as requested in safety initiatives.
Management of unit supplies in a cost effective manner.
1)Participate in inventory, ordering and distribution of clerical supplies.
2)Maintain a current supply of patient forms including disposition of outdated forms.
Maintain safety and cleanliness of the unit environment.
1)Ensure timely and accurate processing of orders for unit and equipment repairs.
2)Maintain cleanliness and organization of immediate work area.
3)Works in a manner that is in compliance with hospital infection control standards, OSHA and other regulatory agencies.
Contribute to a harmonious work environment and positive guest relations.
1)Foster positive communication between all members of the health care team.
2)Demonstrate knowledge of proper telephone function and proper telephone etiquette.
3)Acknowledge and respond to all internal and external customers who approach the nurse’s station.
4)Acknowledge and/or communicate to staff call lights that have been activated.
5)Coordinate incoming and outgoing calls including recording and reporting of pages and messages.
6)Participator in Performance Improvement through monitoring indicators as assigned and attend unit meetings and appropriate inservice education.
Monitor discharge activities related to the billing process.
1)Identify those parties qualifying for courtesy discharge.
2)Communicate to the business office those patients who do not qualify for courtesy discharge.
3)Notify business office of patient transfer to other facilities at least 2 hours prior to transfer.
4)Maintain pending discharge list according to standard.
5)Process patient discharge in a timely manner.
Coordinate all activities related to the patient’s admission process.
1)Greet patient upon arrival to the unit and begin admitting process.
2)Ensure that Patient Admission Folder is complete
3)Verify complete and accurate patient registration information in Allegra System; initiate or complete if not previously performed.
4)Obtain signatures on appropriate forms as well as copy of insurance cards.
5)Provide materials and verbal instructions to the patient and family members on procedures related to TV use and charges, telephone use and charges, unit specific procedures, visiting hours, and courtesy discharge concepts.
6)Participate in appropriate patient identification by preparing armbands and overbid signs to include patient name and special patient consideration.
7)Provide the cashier’s office with insurance information obtained during the admitting process.
8)Perform timely OBS conversion to inpatient status in a timely manner.
