The Department of Conservation and Recreation manages one of the largest and most diverse state parks systems in the nation and protects and enhances natural resources and outdoor recreational opportunities throughout Massachusetts. The DCR system includes over 450,000 acres of parks, forests, water supply protection lands, beaches, lakes, ponds, playgrounds, swimming pools, skating rinks, golf courses, trails and parkways.
The Department of Conservation and Recreation seeks qualified applicants for the position of Civil Engineer I for the Water Supply Protection Division, Quabbin/Ware Region, located in Belchertown, Massachusetts.
Under the supervision of the Project Engineer, the Civil Engineer I will assist the Civil Engineering staff in the collection, management and assembling of data and information in both the office and field. Assists survey party on location with topographic, construction layout and facility survey work. Draft engineering and architectural drawings based on instructions or sketches supplied by other staff or established standards for minor construction, renovation and maintenance work. Indexes, catalogs and files engineering maps, plans and other engineering reference information related to facility maintenance projects. Participate in roadway and water quality infrastructure investigations. Assist Engineering staff with planning, scheduling and coordinating minor construction, renovation and maintenance projects.
- Assist with the collection of daily reservoir data including precipitation, temperatures, reservoir elevation, USGS readings, meter readings for releases, diversions and water usage.
- Assist in the preparation of meteorological and reservoir yield reports.
- Analyze precipitation and flow data and maintain a historical database of related parameters.
- Perform engineering surveys, including the operation of level, theodolite, total station, data collector and other surveying equipment.
- Reduce data collected by performing necessary calculations such as those related to traverses, determination of quantities, elevations, flows, etc.
- Draft using AutoCAD (Civil 3D) to generate engineering and architectural drawings based on field collected survey data, instructions, or sketches supplied by other staff.
- Leverage ArcGIS Online and related applications for field collection, inspection and reporting on various assets, including infrastructure.
- Prepare memoranda, technical reports and/or letters, for review by Project Engineer, concerning the status of engineering projects and/or facility upgrades and needs.
- Track, organize and maintain documentation of facility related infrastructure and maintenance. Enter information into Division databases and computer spreadsheets.
- Assist engineering staff with the maintenance, troubleshooting, testing and minor repair of facility mechanical systems.
- Snow pack surveys
- Performs related duties as assigned.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Ability to work cooperatively with others.
- Ability to read and interpret plans and specifications.
- Ability to work in the field in all weather conditions and in the office.
- Knowledge of construction materials, survey, engineering design and safety standards governing the construction industry.
- Experience/knowledge of computer aided drafting programs such as AutoCAD and other computer software packages used in preparing infrastructure improvement projects and plans.
- Experience with and knowledge of ArcGIS Online tools and applications preferred.
- Strong organizational skills.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- EIT: Engineer in Training Certificate
- Education toward such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.
