Organization Overview
Bozeman Deaconess Health Services, dba, Bozeman Health, is a non‐profit, independent, faith‐based and locally governed health system serving Bozeman and southwest Montana. Bozeman Health is one of the largest private employers in the Gallatin Valley with more than 2,400 employees. The health system is comprised of two hospitals, several specialty treatment centers, a charitable foundation, a network of physician and urgent care clinics, outpatient treatment facilities and retirement and assisted living facilities.
The system’s focus is summarized by three basic purposes: 1) continue to improve community health through education and prevention; 2) improve convenience and access to health care in communities across the region; and 3) promote quality, accountability and reliability across the entire integrated health system.
Bozeman Health is governed by a community board of directors. In 1897, a local physician built and operated Bozeman’s first and sole medical facility, a “Sanitarium,” which was then leased to Methodist deaconesses beginning in 1902. In 1911, the Bozeman community and the Montana Annual Conference of The Methodist Episcopal Church formed a partnership to purchase this facility and renamed the venture Bozeman Deaconess Hospital. The hospital continued to be managed by the deaconesses until the 1940s.
Recognizing the value of spirit, body, and mind in the healing process, Bozeman Health has continued to emphasize its Methodist heritage with investment in sanctuary space, collaboration with the Spiritual Care department, and purposeful engagement of United Methodists in hospital governance. Per organizational bylaws, the Bozeman Health Board of Directors is composed of volunteer community and industry leaders, with recruitment to include the intentional sourcing of individuals who are members of The United Methodist Church. One such member of the Board must be a clergy person appointed by the Mountain Sky Conference. Bozeman Health’s relationship to The United Methodist Church is through its Mountain Sky Conference, the regional body which oversees all United Methodist congregations in the Rocky Mountain region – Colorado, Utah, Wyoming, Montana, and part of eastern Idaho.
Bozeman Health consists of the flagship Bozeman Health Deaconess Regional Medical Center, Bozeman Health Medical Group, Highland Park Medical Campus, a real estate development corporation, and Bozeman Health Big Sky Medical Center. In addition, the system includes Bozeman Health Hillcrest Senior Living with independent and assisted living facilities, an outpatient services center, a same-day surgery center, a clinical research group, and b2 Care which is a retail health division with b2 VirtualCare, b2 MicroCare and b2 Urgent Care.
Bozeman Health Deaconess Regional Medical Center is the cornerstone of the system and has provided caring, professional medical services for more than a century. What began as a 20-bed hospital over 100 years ago, now has 125 licensed beds with 760 RNs and 240 employed providers including physicians and advanced practice clinicians. Bozeman Health Deaconess Regional Medical Center is DNV GL-accredited and is a licensed Level III trauma center. The hospital received a CMS 5-star rating for overall quality in 2021.
Bozeman Health includes a network of 40 ambulatory care sites throughout the region. The system’s primary care practices were the first in Montana to receive National Committee for Quality Assurance Level III Medical Home recognition.
Bozeman Big Sky Medical Center offers critical access care to the Big Sky and West Yellowstone communities and surrounding areas. Licensed and built as an eight-bed hospital unit, the two-story, 35,000 square-foot facility houses numerous services under one roof, improving access to healthcare in a local community setting. Services include inpatient care, swing bed care, x-ray, CT, MRI, ultrasound, lab, retail pharmacy, family medicine clinic, behavioral health clinic, physical therapy, urgent care and 24/7 emergency services with a heli-stop for air ambulance.
Bozeman Health Deaconess Regional Hospital was named by The Chartis Group as a 2022 Top 100 Rural & Community Hospitals. The hospital is a designated Blue Distinction Center Plus for Maternity Care and a designated Blue Distinction Center for Knee and Hip Replacement and Spine Surgery by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Montana.
