Job Summary

  • Assists the pharmacist in preparing and dispensing medications to patients and patient care areas. Identifies, prepares, packages, labels and delivers medications, including sterile products (includes chemotherapy), under the supervision of a pharmacist.

Education

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent (Required)
  • Trade School: Pharmacy Technician Training Program (Preferred)

General Responsibilities

  • Complies with all Temple University Health System policies and procedures, and all applicable accreditation standards, laws and regulations, including those regarding patient confidentiality such as, but not limited to, Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996, P. L. 104-191 ('HIPAA') and the rules and regulations implemented hereunder.

Medication Ordering & Receiving

  • Checks and restocks medication storage areas in the pharmacy throughout their shift.
  • Adds items needed for the next order to the department "want book" or drug order worksheets.
  • Using computerized programs or telephone, places orders for medications and intravenous solutions with the pharmaceutical wholesaler or other vendors.
  • Receives, checks in (verifies), and puts away orders received from the pharmaceutical wholesaler, direct orders from pharmaceutical manufacturers, and other suppliers.

Quality Control/Improvement

  • Checks medication storage areas within and outside of the department to insure that no medications are out of date or otherwise inappropriate for administration. Completes these checks on time and submits completed documentation.
  • Reviews automated drug cabinet inventory and removes outdating medications as frequently as weekly and no less frequently than monthly.
  • Checks expiration dates of Code Blue trays on a monthly basis. If any are outdated, removes and updates medications using the computerized code cart tray program.
  • Cleans and documents the cleaning of department's laminar air flow hoods, biological safety cabinets, the general pharmacy work/storage areas, and the pharmacy IV clean room/chemotherapy preparation area as per department policy and procedure.
  • Monitors ambient air temperature and humidity in all Pharmacy drug storage areas. Monitors temperature of department refrigerators, freezers, and warmers. Reports out of range temperatures and follows up with appropriate departments related to repairs.
  • Responds to alarms from refrigerators, freezers, and air pressure monitors (clean room).

Medication Distribution

  • Collects prescriber medication orders from the patient care areas. Delivers medications, intravenous admixtures, and chemotherapy to patient care areas.
  • When necessary, based upon patient need, delivers medications or supplies on an "on demand basis".
  • Fills prescriber orders for pharmacist check. This may include entry of these orders into the pharmacy computer system.
  • Reviews reports from automated drug cabinets related to stock needed for the next refill cycle. Pulls these medications from stock and records necessary information on labels for pharmacist check. Restocks the automated drug cabinets.
  • Ensures that medications are stored safely and in a secure manner.
  • Fills and delivers inter and intra-departmental medication requisitions.
  • Stocks intravenous solutions, intravenous tubing, flushes, and other floor stock items in the patient care areas (either main function or while covering for the technician who provides these services as their main function).
  • Exchanges medication trays from Code Blue cart (cardiac arrest) once notified of the need. Checks and then refills tray for storage in the Pharmacy using computerized code cart tray program.

Personal & Staff Development

  • Participates in department or vendor presentations.
  • Completes training activities for new processes or devices used by the department.
  • If certified, completes required continuing education credits as per the requirements for certification renewal.
  • Participates in the orientation and training of new department staff. Acts as a resource or mentor to new or more junior Pharmacy Technicians or Pharmacy Interns.

Medication Preparation

  • Prepares and labels large and small volume intravenous solutions, including hydration fluids, antibiotics, pain medications and chemotherapy for pharmacist check.
  • Prepares, packages, and labels oral and parenteral unit dose medications from bulk packages (including chemotherapy), subsequent to physician orders and prior to pharmacist check.
  • Compounds non-commercially available products (e.g. AOH Mouthwash or liquids from tablets or capsules) using department approved procedures and for a pharmacist check.

Medication Related Cognitive Functions

  • Responds to and screens telephone inquiries received by the pharmacy.
  • Triages the telephone call to see if they can assist or if the call needs to be referred to a pharmacist.
  • As directed by the pharmacist, communicates with the nursing staff related to patient specific medication needs such as patient own medications, medication infusion hang times, patient allergies / intolerances, or drug refill needs.

Medication Record Keeping

  • Utilizes computerized record keeping and ordering systems, maintaining drug inventory, patient profiles, and billing of patient specific information.
  • Files patient paper profiles and other patient care related and ordering documents.
  • Ensures that all medication related records (such as packaging records or compounding log forms) are complete, accurate, and legible. Follows department standards or policies related to documentation.

Medication Safety & Risk Management

  • While filling automated drug cabinets insures that drug entered is correct by use of bar code scan. Also insures that amount placed into the machine and the drug expiration date is correct.
  • Reports near misses and medication errors using the organization approved reporting program (Midas).
  • Completes annual competencies, screenings, and performance measurements by their due date. Submits certificates of completion to department leadership.
  • Minimizes the potential for errors associated with labeling, packaging, or look alike/ sound alike names.
  • Ensures that all double checks and other verifications are in place during medication preparation and distribution.
  • Monitors equipment used (computers, printers, automated drug cabinets) to insure that it is working correctly and as expected. Troubleshoots malfunctioning equipment. Knows when to troubleshoot and when to report to the Technology Specialist Pharmacist or department leadership.
  • Maintains their computer system access by updating passwords. Keeps computer log on and password secure. Calls computer help line when they have access issues.
