Organization Overview

At Lake City Partners Ending Homelessness (LCPEH) our mission is to end homelessness by providing shelter, respite care, work opportunities and other services, so that people have increased opportunities for stabilization, recovery, and permanent housing. With two locations and over 35 staff, we activate our mission by operating shelters and outreach programs in the North Seattle/King County area.

Summary

This position is a member of our team working at our God’s Li’l Acre (GLA) Day Center in Lake City. GLA is a peaceful sanctuary for people living on the street - a place for people to clean up, have a meal, connect with the community, and feel supported by each other and by staff. Resources at GLA include showers and laundry, personal storage, a community kitchen, clothing depot, phone, mail distribution, wifi, and simply a place to be. Guests are primarily single adults from diverse backgrounds. Many guests could be described as chronically homeless with numerous challenges that make it difficult to find or maintain housing and employment. Although challenges may include disability, anger management, trauma history, chemical dependency, PTSD, depression, and other mental illnesses; volunteers and staff at GLA seek to affirm the creativity, resiliency, generosity, skills, assets, and giftedness of each person.

This position is focused on establishing and sustaining case management relationships with GLA clients who are working to overcome barriers that prevent them from accessing stable housing. While reporting directly to the GLA Program Director, this position will also work closely with our Client Services team with access to LCPEH Case Management staff & resources, Housing Specialist, and Community Outreach Specialists as part of the LCPEH integrated approach to ending homelessness - one person at a time.

Essential Functions

  • Provide casework services to GLA clients, using motivational interviewing and best practices to support clients in collaboratively developing and following a housing plan.
  • Assist clients in accessing appropriate community resources, including physical, mental, and behavioral health care; state and federal benefits; etc.
  • Refer clients to additional community resources, based on their individual needs.
  • Provide reliable support and consistent follow up according to the case plan
  • Enroll individuals in Homelessness Management Information System (HMIS), Coordinated Entry for All (CEA), and LCPEH ‘by-name’ list.
  • Attend CEA Case Conferencing and advocate for clients, as needed.
  • Demonstrate understanding of and sensitivity to marginalized populations and trauma recovery work.
  • Demonstrate flexibility and willingness to take on a variety of tasks.
  • Prepare participants for housing eligibility by collecting identification documents needed for housing such as: Social Security cards, state/tribal/shelter/other identification cards, income verification and other documents required to apply for housing
  • Collaborate with the Housing Specialist to assess the participants’ housing goals through a housing assessment; identify housing readiness and housing pathways available for the participant.
  • Utilize electronic case management system for case notes; ensure accurate and objective documentation of services in electronic files for participants.
  • Demonstrate kindness, compassion, flexibility, accountability, and care for the people using GLA services.

  • Must maintain a professional appearance, conduct, and interactions with program participants, clients, partners, and other staff at all times.
  • The ability to speak, read, and write in English; strong candidates may have additional language skills.
  • Technical ability to research, complete, and submit online forms, applications, and supporting documents as part of normal activities in working with program participants.
  • Knowledge and practical experience of HIPAA and other social services' ethical standards and best practices.
  • An ability to communicate with people or groups with varying perspectives or positions.
  • Sensitivity to marginalized populations and trauma recovery work.
  • Flexibility and willingness to take on a variety of tasks.
  • Experience and proficiency with Google Workspace (including appropriate and timely use of gmail, calendar, drive etc.), Microsoft Suite (Office/Excel/Windows), Clarity/HMIS.
  • Understanding of, or willingness to learn and practice, harm reduction and trauma informed care practices.

Expectations

The Participant Support Specialist will be expected to:

  • Arrive when scheduled to work, and consistently and on time for client meetings.
  • Attend monthly after-hours staff meetings.
  • Maintain clear and appropriate boundaries with clients, staff, and volunteers.
  • Find patience and be flexible in the midst of the chaos of the impact of traumatic stress in people’s lives.
  • Communicate clearly and effectively with clients, team members, and community partners, including accurate and timely documentation of conversations and case progress.
  • Demonstrate flexibility and willingness to take on a variety of tasks.

Work environment

Weekly schedules should be completed during open hours, Monday through Friday, 9AM - 4PM, but some weekend, evening, and overnight work may be required.

Due to the direct service nature of our work, most work is expected to be completed on-site or in the nearby neighborhood. Work from Home (WFH) is not available.

Occasional offsite tasks, such as meetings with community members, may be required. Use of personal vehicles is eligible for reimbursement in accordance with state and federal laws and Lake City Partners Ending Homelessness policy.

Our diverse client/guest/resident community includes many single, formerly homeless adults who lack any family support system. Compounding the constraints of poverty, our community includes individuals who are physically and/or mentally disabled, those who struggle with chemical dependencies (SUD), veterans, and vulnerable, elderly adults. Working at LCPEH will mean that you will be in close proximity to the people we serve.

Some LCPEH facilities are monitored with camera surveillance equipment for safety and security purposes. The cameras will generally be utilized only in public areas where there is not a reasonable expectation of privacy.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear.
  • The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, use hands to handle/feel/type, and reach with hands and arms. Requires the ability to occasionally push, pull, lift and/or carry supplies up to 50 pounds.
  • Work takes place in a supportive homelessness/shelter/social services environment where long periods of sitting, working on a computer, walking to various work areas, going up and down stairs, and standing are required.
  • Travel to program sites and meetings outside the office and around the county are sometimes necessary.
  • Mental efforts like attention to detail, interacting with others in-person and through email, using critical thinking skills to strategize, develop and implement case plans, create, and edit documents, listen, and participate verbally at meetings.

Required education and experience

  • Associates Degree in Human Services or related field
  • 2 years experience in Human, Social, or Homelessness Services.
  • Social Work or related experience and/or training.
  • Or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred education and experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree (or higher) in Social Work or related field.
  • 3-5 years of Human, Social, or Homelessness Services.
  • Lived experience of housing instability or homelessness.
  • Spanish language skills
