Position Summary:
The Business Intelligence Analyst (BIA) is responsible for creating and executing business workflow processes and procedures related to data analysis, including reporting, trending, and data mining at a university-wide level. The individual in this role is responsible for reviewing, analyzing, and evaluating the effectiveness of programs/projects and making recommendations for enhancements and new system designs. The BIA works with end users to define business requirements and create a robust reporting and data analysis environment to meet business needs. The individual in this role supports all business users with reporting tools and report and analytic model creations as needed. The BIA is responsible for developing, documenting, and testing processes and procedures related to upgrades and patching of BI environments.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Configure, maintain, and monitor the Cognos BI environment, including defining and updating models, and researching new security enhancements and releases. Work to develop and implement security models for BI reporting applications for all reporting environments, including Cognos, data warehouses, and Oracle.
  • Work with business users to define business needs for reporting and data analysis. Along with business users, take defined needs and execute a fully functional BI solution to include reports, dashboards, forecasting models, and data mining models where applicable. Analyze and profile source system data and recommend BI solutions for analysis and reporting needs.
  • Create and maintain documentation for BI reporting systems, including training documentation. Train all BI platform users on BI reporting tools including how to write and run reports. Create and administer test plans related to upgrades and patching of Cognos BI environments.
  • Special projects and continuous professional and technical development.
  • Perform other duties and assist with projects as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:
Formal Education
  • Bachelor’s degree in an Information Technology-related field


Work Experience
  • 5 years of BI programming and report creation experience

Work Skills (e.g., written and verbal communication skills)
  • Ability to work effectively with both technical and non-technical staff, including coordinating and planning of work effort amongst UNIT teams
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong analytical and quantitative skills
  • Ability to handle multiple projects/tasks simultaneously
  • Knowledge of project management disciplines and methodology and change management
  • Excellent time management skills
  • Working knowledge of data analysis, data modeling, and business intelligence software and tools

Specific Job Knowledge (e.g., knowledge of principles and procedures related to field and area)
  • Competency with Cognos system administration and support
  • Experience working with databases
  • Working knowledge of SQL

Preferred Qualifications:
Formal Education
  • Master’s degree
  • Project Management Institute (PMI) Project Management Professional (PMP) preferred, or related experience


Work Experience
  • Experience working in higher education

Specific Job Knowledge (e.g., knowledge of principles and procedures related to field and area)
  • Experience in PL/SQL and other Developer tools
  • Proficiency with Linux scripting
  • Experience with reporting tools such as Cognos, Argos, Tableau, and HelioCampus
  • Experience with Ellucian ODS and EDW
  • Experience with integration tools, such as Ethos and Boomi
  • Experience working with Oracle databases
  • Knowledge of reporting research platforms, such as HPC
