We are seeking a Bioinformatician responsible for the study, development, maintenance, and performance of cutting-edge next generation sequencing (NGS) based biological assays in the areas of bacteriology, virology, and parasitology. In addition to the wet-lab testings this position also puts an emphasizes on the bioinformatics side of NGS utilizing advanced computational methods to analyze the results obtained from NGS assays.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Develop onboarding package for IP team including IP Toolkits and SOPs.
  • Manage operating functions of the IP team with direct supervision of staff’s onsite infection control program assessments in congregate care settings; including long-term care facilities, assisted living, memory care and other congregate facilities as directed.
  • Coach staff on performing onsite ICARS, documentation results, and process for the team to communicate assessment to LTC facility and arrange follow up for gaps accessed in each facility.
  • Lead change and continuous improvement initiatives for infection prevention across the continuum of care.
  • Maintain current knowledge of Infection Prevention CDC guidance, literature reviews and IDOH guidelines for infectious diseases and create standard work for the IP team to share across the state.
  • Provide guidance to all LTC facilities in the development, implementation, and practice guidance of infection prevention policies and procedures regarding all emerging pathogens, including COVID-19.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to maintain compliance with standards and regulations pertaining to infection control of accrediting and governing authorities.
  • Provide IP Epidemiologist with the CDC requirements for preparing quarterly metrics, special and periodic reports.
  • Oversee the Epidemiologist reports and collaborate together to use this data to drive results for improved infection control practices for process improvement in LTC.
  • Build and maintain positive working relationship with peers and other state partners, and within the IDOH Epidemiology Resource Center.
  • Provide recommendations for training and technical assistance based on opportunities for improvement identified during onsite assessments.
  • Assist in development and arrangement of IP education to acute care and LTC facilities regarding infection prevention and control for COVID, dental complaints, multi-drug resistant organisms, health care associated infections and other infectious diseases as necessary.
  • Serves as the subject matter expert for general infection prevention and control practices for IDOH leadership team.
  • Partner with the IDOH Regulatory Division to provide infection control guidance as directed by following up with regulatory tags.
  • Schedule webinars and communication to acute and LTC for infection prevention emerging pathogens and updates to CDC guidance.

Job Requirements:

  • Extensive knowledge of the principles, theories and practices of molecular biology, NGS and related sub- specialties
  • Specialized knowledge of bioinformatic pipelines, analysis tools, and best practices in analysis of NGS data
  • Specialized knowledge of current scientific methods and testing procedures and the ability to apply them when seeking solutions to public health laboratory problems
  • Specialized knowledge of troubleshooting techniques for NGS applications at the bench level as well as in analysis
  • Specialized knowledge of and ability to use a full range of standard technical equipment, complex scientific apparatus, and automated techniques of analysis
  • Extensive knowledge of laboratory safety practices and principles
  • Aware of state and federal laws, rules, regulations, and policies concerning the program area (i.e. CLIA)
  • Ability to meet requirements for personnel certification as a technologist pursuant to the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act (CLIA)
  • Ability to effectively communicate technical information both verbally and in writing and maintain productive working relationships
  • Ability to satisfactorily participate in proficiency testing programs and recognize QA problems
  • Ability to compile, analyze, evaluate, and prepare laboratory reports.
