Corning is looking for a technology manager to lead the development of optical connectivity solutions for automotive application. This role is part of a team tasked to identify and develop new business opportunities for Corning’s innovations within Automotive space. Individual in this role will work closely with program leader as well as with other functional leaders in the program and across multiple business units.


Day to Day Responsibilities:

  • Technology lead for a cross functional program team that is responsible to deliver high performance, robust, cost-effective optical connectivity solutions to capture growth opportunities in the emerging high data rate automotive connectivity market.
  • Take ownership for the overall technical workstreams including product development, evaluation, testing and modeling.
  • Lead technology delivery through early-stage research, development and engineering activities and subsequent transition into manufacturing.
  • Skillfully work across multiple functional organizations and across business units.
  • Work with project team members to solve process, engineering and equipment related challenges.
  • Work with commercial teams to align customer requirements and Corning capabilities.
  • Assumes accountability for the completion of technology projects. Steers successful operation of technology activities of major significance.
  • Set technology priorities and tactical direction for the team based on impact to business results, allocated resources and timelines required to manage and support a new market application.
  • Actively manage the technical progress and risks in order to proactively mitigate critical barriers and deliver technology on time.
  • Ability to work in a team-based environment and participate on a highly matrixed project team. Builds and leads the technical team with solid and matrixed members.
  • Work across businesses and technology directorates to ensure efficient communications and alignment of technology road-maps. Connects strategically with other businesses and/or functions to deliver technology.
  • Leads collaborative technology delivery with external entities, including assessing external capabilities and synergistic opportunities, establishing agreements as needed, defining work plans, and execution.
  • Leads technology assessment and work definition for external supply chain entities to enable prototyping and pilot line manufacturing.
  • Support program lead by participating in program organizational level strategy-setting. Exerts influence in the development of overall objectives and long-term goals of the organization.
  • Support program lead in planning for technology objectives, capability needs, roadmaps, budgeting, and resources. With functional supervisor, generates the Business Technology Strategy, and technology portion of annual Deep Dives.
  • Develop a high level fundamental understanding of high data rate links in automotive systems, as well as the key attributes that Corning can impact through optical technologies.

Required Skills:

  • Experience and expertise in one of more of the following areas: Optical Physics, Mechanical Reliability, Glass or Inorganic Brittle Materials
  • Demonstrated experience in leading early-stage product development projects/programs.
  • Successful development and delivery of new highly technical products for optical systems.
  • Proven technology leadership experience.
  • Strong technical leadership skills that will enable unique solutions to the technical challenges.
  • Demonstrated technology leadership experience with ability to achieve results through a highly matrixed project team.
  • Ability to effectively manage emerging customer and market requirements associated with early stage projects.
  • Ability to interface with senior management and provide clear concise technology strategies resources needs and trade-offs.
  • Ability to effectively leverage and manage both internal and external resources. Individual must be capable of executing project assignments with minimal supervision.
  • Strong level of technical curiosity that will enable unique solutions to the technical challenges

Desired Skills:

  • Knowledge of Corning’s innovation and manufacturing processes.
  • Knowledge of product and application experience with high data rate links inside vehicles.
  • Experience with product qualification and reliability testing processes.
  • Experience in managing direct reports and/or matrixed resources.

Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time:

  • Normal Business Hours (8 – 5, M – F), however, expected to work hours required to achieve project objectives will regularly exceed 40 hours per week.

Travel Requirements:

  • Estimated travel at 20% depending upon specific project assignment. Increased travel may be required to support customer and supplier engagements.

Education and Experience:

  • BS, MS or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, or Materials Science.
  • 5+ years managing complex projects preferably involving optical cables or new technology/material development for automotive markets
